There would always be an endless debate about the power and perils of speaking the truth. With the
intervention of social media, the ability as a society to separate truth from lies is under unprecedented
threat. Sometimes, people lie to inflate their image. However, in most cases, speaking the truth leads
them to power. This often leads them to make an even more transformative society who are ready to
face and sense the truth or the reality within the place where they live in. in this lesson, listen to the
voice of the young girl as she speaks the truth and empower her community.
Read through the experience of an 11-year old Zlata Filipovic in her war-torn hometown of Saravejo.
Her diary shares her life for three years amidst in 10-year war. Learn about how Zlata and her family
lived throughout the war and the challenges they overcome. Take inspiration from then a young girl
who at present uses her voice and experience to speak against the tragedy of war and its effects to
children.

From a perspective of an 11-year old girl, you were able to have a glimpse of the ethnically-based wars
and insurgencies that took place in Yugoslavia from 1991 to 2001. Here in the Philippines, Filipinos have
also witnessed several outrage. Through the Internet, research on how children have lived through
conflict and tension. Create a powerpoint presentation outlining the experiences of these children. In the
end of your presentation, make a public advocacy statement that children have the right to protection in
times of war.
