GAS EXCHANGE AT THE

MUSCLES
Objectives:
Define arterial-venous oxygen difference.
Explain how the oxygen transport to muscles.
Differences of myogoblin and hemogoblin.
Factors that influence oxygen uptake in the muscle.
ARTERIAL-VENOUS OXYGEN DIFFERENCE
Amount of oxygen extracted from the
blood as it through the body

At rest, the oxygen content of arterial

blood is about 20ml of oxygen per
100ml of blood.

It reflects the 4-5 ml of oxygen per 100

ml of blood taken up by the tissues.
OXYGEN TRANSPORT IN THE MSUCLE
Oxygen must get to the
mitochondria to be used.

Myoglobin is the muscle

version of hemoglobin.

Myoglobin dissociation
curve is much steeper
than hemoglobin.
FACTORS INFLUENCING OXYGEN DELIVERY AND UPTAKE
Oxygen content of blood
Blood flow
Local conditions (e.g., pH, temperature)
CARBON DIOXIDE REMOVAL
Carbon dioxide exchange at the
tissues is similar to oxygen exchange,
except that carbon dioxide leaves the
muscles, where it is formed, and
enters the blood to be transported to
the lungs.
