CONGRATULATIONS YOU ARE GREAT
A. INTRODUCTION
Look at the following pictures!

What do you see in the pictures?When you best friend won a competition, what should you say
to him?Moreever, he did the best in the competition, what should you say him?
The appropriate expressions to tell are giving congratulation and compliment. If you achieve
something, do you want to get congratulations?Do you like being complimented?
In our culture, beside expressing congratulation and compliment, giving applause and shaking
hand are ways to congratulating and praising someone who achieved something.
In this chapter, we are going to discuss about expressions of giving congratulations and
compliment with the responses.

1. Giving Congratulation
Saying congratulations is one of the best ways to let a person know that you are of
him/her. If you cannot say it directly, send them a greeting card.
The following are some expressions of congratulations.
 May we congratulations you on… ● Congratulations!
 I must congratulate you on… ●Well done/great job
 I congratulate you on… ●Good luck
 Please accept my warmest congratulations… ●Happy birthday
 Congratulations on your… ●Many happy returns
 This calls for a celebration… ●Happy New Year
We can use the following responses

 I don’t know what to say

 Oh, not really
 Oh, it’s nothing special actually.
We can also congratulate someone by sending a congratulations card. A greeting card is
an illustrated card featuring an sxpression of friendship or other sentiment. It is usually given
on special occasion. Congratulation cards belong to greeting cards. A greeting card is usually
a piece of paper or folded paper with text or images on the front and message inside.
However, there are variations of greeting cards. Look at the following examples.
Those are some congratulations cards. The first card is to congratulate someone who won
a competition. The second card is for someone who just graduated. The last card is to
congratulate someone’s birthday.
A congratulation card consists of the name of the receiver, the congratulation message,
and the writer or the sender.
2. Giving Compliment or Praising
Praising is expressing strong approval or admiration, especially in public. Giving
compliment is telling something nice to or about someone.
People like giving compliment to show their attention or to make someone attracted to
them, or to feel pleased, too. In other words, compliment functions to improve relationship
between people. Everyone likes to hear compliment.
Social Functions of Giving Compliment
Compliment make people feel good about themselves and we all need that at times. In
other words, giving compliment is a way of showing that you have noticed and appreciated
something about someone or situation. A compliment is expression of praise or admiration.\
To compliment means to tell someone that you like the way they look ot that you are
pleased with something they have done. A compliment is a remark expressing admiration,
approval, or respect. Most compliment are used to express attention. If you often compliment
your friends, it means that you are good and attentive person. So, give someone a compliment
today!

In Indonesian culture, being modest is the best way of responding a compliment. The
following are examples of responding a compliment.
a. Thank you. It’s very kind of to say that.\
b. Thank you. yours is nicer.
c. Thank you, but it isn’t anything special.
Structures of Giving Compliment

Last Sunday, I read a teenager magazine which I borrowed from my friend. There was a news about pageant contest. I was surprised

C. Adjectives
When we congratulate and give compliment to someone, we use adjectives. Pay attention to
the following examples!

- You look beautiful. I like your hair.

- Your cooking is delicious.
Pattern : Be + Adjective or look + Adjective
Before you use expressions of compliment, pay attention to te context! Read the following
situations!
1. Ani was invited by Sita for her birthday party. Ani enjoyed the party very much. On the
next day, Ani meets Sita at school. She gives compliment to Sita. “That was a fun party.”
2. Dio is in Ari’s house now. Ari is learning how to make a cake. Dio is watching Ari’s
cake. He gives him a compliment. “ That is a lovely cake.”

Congratulations is an expressions of joy the success or good fortune of another. To
congratulate is to show pleasure for people on happy occasions in their lives. By
congratulating someone, you put your self in line to be blessed immeasurably, perhaps
sometimes even more than the will be given a compliment. Finding something positive to say
to someone at least once a day will give friends. We all need someone in our lives we can
trust, and the more we build up others the more we’re also building up ourselves.
