Showing Attention

1. Information to Share

We use the expressions of Showing Attention to show that we are paying attention to
what someone’s saying.

2. There are some examples of expressions that are used to show attention:

– I see

– Tell me more

– Really?

– What is happened next?

Respond to Expressions of Asking for/Showing Attention

There are some examples of expressions that we can


use when we ask for attention/Showing Attention:

• Yes, please.

• Allright.

• Sure.

Checking for Understanding

• Information to Share

When we are talking to someone, it is better to check listener’s understanding to avoid


misunderstanding.

• There are some examples of expressions that can use to check someone’s understanding:

– Do you understand what I’m saying?

– Does that make any sense?

– Are you with me?

– You see?

Indicate Understanding & Misunderstanding

There are some examples of expressions that are used to indicate someone’s:

• I see what you’re saying. • I don’t get it.
• I know what you mean. • I don’t follow you.
• I know. • I’m not sure I get your point.
• I’m with you. • I’m not sure I know what you
mean.

Cultural Awareness

• In English, people tend to say honestly when they are not really understand about what
other’s saying. When they are not really understand, they might use the expressions that
indicate misunderstanding, such as “I don’t get it”, “I’m not sure I get your point”, “I
don’t follow you”, and etc.

• In Indonesia, people are tend to be silent when they are not really understand about what
other’s saying.

– Compliments express approval, admiration and respect.

– Compliments can be a piece of paper printed with name and address of a


company which is sent with a parcel in place of a letter.
– Compliments are used to sustain good relationships among teachers, students and
others.

Cultural Awareness :

• There are some different ways in giving and responding compliments.

In Indonesia, people do not tend to give compliment spontaneously and they tend to refuse the
compliments given.

In English, people tend to give compliment spontaneously of what they see and feel. They also
tend to accept the sincere compliments.

We ask opinion to know about someone’s opinion about the particular things.
2. Examples
These are some examples of expressions used to ask for opinion:

 What do you think ...?  The song is beautiful.
 What about ...?  You are right.
 ......, isn’t it/he/she?  I don’t think so.
 ..., aren’t I/we/they?  I think .... / In my opinion, ....

Cultural Awarenes

In English, people asking about others opinion because they want to know what people
think about something or to get critic from other so they can do better about something.

In Indonesia, people tend to avoid asking about others opinion


because most of them are afraid to be criticized by others.
