2 "Animation" is the creation of a sequence of images (drawn, painted, or produced by

other artistic methods) that change over time to portray the illusion of motion. Before the invention of
"film", we portrayed motion in static art until the 19th century when several devices successfully
depicted motion in animated images.

•Early approaches to animating art

An Egyptian burial chamber mural
approximately 4000 years old found in the
tomb of "Khnumhotep" features a very long
series of images which apparently narrates a
wrestling match. Ancient Chinese records
mentioned several devices, that were said to
"give an impression of movement" to a series Figure 1: An example of early approaches in motion of arts

of human or animal figures on them, unclear as

they are, they may only refer to actual movements of figures through space. Although
throughout history some of the examples (like mentioned) may seem similar to animation
drawings, the lack of means to show them in motion and extremely low frame rate caused
them to fall short of being true animation series.

•Animation before film

Animated images was since been successfully displayed by a number of devices that was
introduced before the advent of motion pictures. Yet, the majority of these devices didn’t
project their images making them useable for only one person at a time. For this reason they
were considered toys rather than large scale produced devices for the entertainment industry
like later animation. Most are still being built by and for film students learning the basics of
animation.
