 How to Make Exfoliating Gel with Microspheres
A guide to making an exfoliating gel with microspheres, including the ingredients and steps
involved.
Gel Composition
- Gel can be made in 50 to 100g batches

- Gel is non-anionic and is composed of

hydrogenethylcellulose, methylparaben, and
distilled water

- Hydrogenethylcellulose makes up 1.8% of the gel,

with 0.15% methylparaben

- Water is solubilized with the preservative at 80

degrees Celsius, then hydrogenethylcellulose is
added with moderate agitation

- Gel is mixed until temperature is reduced and pH

checked (should be between 5.0 and 6.0)

Why We Use Natrosol
- Natrosol is a polymer that can handle a wide range of pH levels

- This makes it a good vehicle for incorporating acids like glycolic acid
Adding Active Ingredients
- Gel can be infused with active ingredients like moisturizing agents (e.g. aloe vera extract) and
microspheres (e.g. physical exfoliants)

- Glycolic acid can also be added for its exfoliating and pigment-reducing effects
Making the Gel
- The gel is made in two phases, first preparing the
base (as detailed in points 1 and 2) before adding
active ingredients (as detailed in point 3).

- The gel base composition is non-ionic and

includes:

- Hydroxyethylcellulose 1.8%

- Methylparaben 0.15%

- Water is added to the gel base to make 100 g of

gel.

Making the Gel Base
- Dissolve the methylparaben in water under
agitation at 80 degrees.

- Slowly add the hydroxyethylcellulose with

moderate agitation until the gel forms.

- Transfer the gel base to a mixer to reduce the

temperature.

- Verify the pH of the formulation, which should fall

between 5.0 and 6.0.
