Improve Safety

in your Plant
Reduce near misses & safety incidents
Safety Culture

• Most of the steel companies are now setting

a trend in developing safe working
environment

• Their aim is to decimate near-misses from

your safety reports and completely eliminate
mishaps or untoward incidents

• DNA of great companies – Always look for

new & innovative products to improve safety
(or efficiency)
Root cause analysis – A study of accidents

• A study of root cause analysis always has one

common theme:

• “Accidents occur not because of a single

lapse in safety – It is a culmination of
oversights in many areas”

• Corollary of the above: Even one additional

safety net in place can mean the difference
between a near-miss and accident

• With this in mind safety officers across the

Industry should try to employ as many best
practices that can be implemented within
the constraints of time and economics
Electrical Safety & Injuries

Electrical Safety

• Electricity is an important part of our modern

world and sometimes it is easy to forget just
how dangerous it can be.

• Given the correct circumstances,electricity

can cause serious injuries or even death.

• Electrocution is the cause of 12% of all

workplace deaths among young workers.

• Electrocution is the third leading cause of

work-related deaths
Electrical Injuries

The most common types of electrical injuries are:

• Electrical shock
• Electrocution (death due to electrical shock)
• Burns
• Falls
Hazards in Electrical
Application
Separator subhead line comes here
Hazards in Electrical Application

• The largest number of electricity-related

accidents are reported in the electrical wiring
installations

• Contact with electricity is reported as the

most significant source of fatal injury
accidents

• This leads to contact with electricity being

the most significant in terms of overall risk
and cost of accidents

• Electrical technicians have been involved in

significantly more electricity-related
accidents than any other occupation
Electrical shocks - Mitigating the Risk

• We have introduced Insulated Tools which

mitigates risks in Electrical Applications

• As identified earlier most accidents are

related to electric shocks and this is exactly
what our tools prevent

• By introducing this into your workflow you

tackle one of the most common hazard
causing accidents

• Further electrical technicians are the most

common targets of such incidents and they
are likely to benefit most from using our
tools
What are insulated tools?
• Specially designed for use up to
1000VAC/1500VDC

• Various international standards:

• IEC 60900
• F1505 ASTM
• VDE German
• GS
• IS 13772

• Design & insulation varies from regular steel

tool
Insulated tools – Who requires them?

• Working on energized electrical parts

• Includes:
• Repairing panels
• Jointing of busbars
• Working with car batteries
• HVAC maintenance
• Electricians
• Electrical vehicles
• Power transmission & distribution
Safety Guidelines for Iron & Steel Industry
OSHA recommendation
• Accd to OSHA – Electrical shocks is the fourth
leading cause of deaths
• OSHA Std: 1910.269
• Recommends using insulated tools
• > 50V = Insulated Tools

Flammable &
Explosion Hazards
Separator subhead line comes here
Flammable & Explosion Hazards

• Handling of hydrogen, hydrocarbons &

chemicals poses great risks

• Cleaning of tanks and reactors is fraught

with risk of fire

• Isolation of gas pipelines for repair and

maintenance

• Installation, maintenance and repair of

flanges, blinds etc. are susceptible to residual
flammable compounds
Fatality @ SAIL Bhilai

• Explosion in pipeline near coke oven section

• Cause: Maintenance work being carried out

• Leakage of gas ignited by a friction spark

Reduce Risk of accidents – Non-sparking Tools

• Non-sparking tools have the property that

they do not emit sparks

• These tools have Copper as it base elements

• Non-sparking property is imparted by

Copper

• Copper has excellent thermal conductivity

• It absorbs thermal shocks permeates them

through

• These tools are ideal to mitigate risks of

ignition and explosion
Occupational Safety and Health
Administration (OSHA) Guidelines

• OSHA has published a booklet for Hand and

Power Tools
(https://www.osha.gov/Publications/osha308
0.pdf)

• In this guide it clearly states that Iron and

Steel tools may produce sparks which can be
an ignition source

• Further it states: “Where this hazard exists,

spark-resistant tools made of non-ferrous
materials should be used where flammable
gases, highly volatile liquids, and other
explosive substances are stored or used”
Selecting the correct tool for your
application
• Step 1 - Identify zones and spaces where NS
tools need to be used

• Step 2 – Define the different operations that

need to be performed

• Step 3 – Identify the correct tool and the

correct size of tool that will be required

• While this may sound simple enough most

operators do not perform step 3 correctly

• Fiberglass handles offer a distinct

advantages over wooden handles and should
always be preferred when available
Customized Tools

• Tool selection is very critical when using NST

• Standard NST tools may not work in certain

special applications

• Specific tools have to be customized in such

scenarios

• We at Sparkless® Safety Tools have the

ability to design and develop custom tools

• We also provide specialized toolkits as per

customers requirement
