Timing: 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM

Ques 1. (10 points) The elevations ZA and ZB are at 5 and 7 m. respectively. l1 = 2 m and
manometer deflection l2 = 100cm. Find the pressure difference between A and B.

Ques 2. (10 points) The velocity of water flow in the nozzle shown is given by the following
expression:
V = 2t/(1 − 0.8x/L)2
where, diameter of the inlet part of nozzle D= 1 m, V velocity in meter per second, t time
in seconds, x distance along the nozzle, and length of nozzle L= 4 m. When x = 0.8L and t= 3
s, what is the local acceleration along the centerline? Assume quasi–one-dimensional flow prevails.

Ques 3. (15 points) A rectangular gate shown in figure 3 has dimensions of L and width W
(normal to the page). The gate is supported at the top by a hinge at A and at the bottom by a
stop which exerts a force Fs perpendicular to the gate as shown in the figure. What is the reaction
force acting at hinge A if L= 8m, W = 4m and h= 5m. Neglect the weight of the gate. Water
density ρ is 1000 kg m−3 . It is also given that the moment of inertia of a rectangular plate about

1
the centroidal axis = ab 3 /12, where a is the length along the axis.

Ques 4. (20 points) The drag force on a bullet-shaped device may be measured using a wind
tunnel. The tunnel is cylindrical with a radius of D/2 = 1 m, the pressure at section 1 P1 = 1.5
kPa gage, the pressure at section 2 is P2 = 1.0 kPa gage, and air density ρair = 1.0 kg m−3 . At
the inlet, the velocity is uniform with a magnitude of U = 40 ms−1 . At the exit, the velocity
varies linearly as shown in the sketch. Determine the drag force on the device and support vanes.
Neglect viscous resistance at the wall, and assume pressure to be uniform across sections 1 and 2.
