iv.The pressure is lowered below the vapour pressure at some point in the

flow e.Internal energy and enthalpy are the same quantity.

ii.False. Enthalpy is the internal energy plus a contribution from pressure.
iii.True.
iv.False. Enthalpy is a property of a gas only, internal energy applies to both gases and liquids.

f.The flow of water over a flat plate is measured, and a velocity profile of u = U0(y + 1)2−5 is
observed, where U0 is the speed of the flow approaching the plate, and y is the distance away
from the plate. If the flow speed U0 = 5m.s−1, what is the shear stress on the flat plate?

QUESTION 2
a.A device for measuring the specific weight γ of a liquid consists of a U-tube manometer as shown.
The manometer tube has an internal diameter of 0.5cm. Exactly 2cm3 of the unknown liquid is
poured into one leg of the manometer, on top of the water that is already in the manometer. A
displacement of 5cm is measured between the top of the water on one side of the manometer
and the top of the unknown liquid. What is the specific weight γ of the unknown liquid? 5 marks

b.For the gate shown in the figure below, α = 45◦, y1 = 1m, and y2 = 4m. Will the gate fall or stay
in position? Assume the gate is rectangular, is 1m wide and weighs 15290kg. Assume the water
temperature is T = 15◦C. 10 marks

QUESTION 3
a.A water jet issues vertically from a nozzle as shown in the figure below. The water velocity as it
exits the nozzle is 18m.s−1. How high will the jet rise? What speed would be required at the nozzle
for the height to double? 7 marks

b.A flow measuring device consists of the flow through a nozzle, a stagnation tap at station 2 con-
nected to a manometer containing water, and a static pressure tap at station 1 also connected to
a manometer as shown in the figure below. The diameter of the nozzle at station 1 is twice the di-
ameter at station 2. Air flows through the nozzle. A height difference of 10cm is recorded
between the water surfaces in each side of the manometer. What is the velocity at station 2? 8
marks

QUESTION 4
a.A guide vane is used to redirect a jet of oil of specific gravity S = 0.9 from purely horizontal to
an angle downward as shown in the diagram below. The speed of the jet is constant (V1 = V2) at
V = 22m.s−1 and the flow rate is 0.15m3s−1. The jet cross section does not change as it passes
over the vane. What force in the x and
− y directions are required to hold the vane in place?
Ignore the weight of the vane. 7 marks

b.A streamlined object is being tested in a wind tunnel using air, held in the tunnel using support
vanes as shown in the figure below. The tunnel has a diameter D = 1m. At a point A upstream
of the object, a pressure gauge measures the pressure as pA = 120kPa, and a constant velocity
of V = 35m.s−1 is recorded. At some point downstream, a pressure gauge measures the
pressure as pC = 50kPa, and a velocity of zero at the centreline of the tunnel is recorded. What
is the maximum velocity at point C? What is the drag on the streamlined object and the support
vanes? Assume viscous resistance on the walls can be neglected. 8 marks

QUESTION 5
a.A water discharge of 8m s is required to flow through a horizontal pipe of diameter 1m in the
3 −1

configuration shown in the figure below. If the head loss is given as hL = 7V 2/(2g) where V is
the mean velocity in the pipe, how much power is required from the pump? 6 marks

b.A flow of water between two reservoirs is to be maintained at 0.10m3s−1. The two reservoirs are
connected by a steel pipe (ks = 45 ×10−6m) that is 15cm in diameter with a pump in the middle,
in the configuration shown in the diagram below. The inlet to the pipe from the reservoir is
smooth with a large radius, and the exit from the pipe into the second reservoir is abrupt. What
power must be supplied by the pump? Sketch the Energy grade line (EGL) and the Hydraulic
Grade Line (HGL) for this system. 9 marks

QUESTION 6
a.The flow rate from a draining cylindrical tank depends on the diameter of the tank D, the diameter
of the drain hole d, the height of fluid in the tank h, and the density ρ and viscosity µ of the fluid.
The setup is shown in the diagram below. Find a consistent set of dimensionless groups to
describe this problem and express the functional relationship between them. 8 marks

b.The drag on a submarine moving underwater in the ocean (seawater density ρ = 1015kg.m−3,
viscosity µ = 1.4 ×10−3m2s−1) is to be determined by testing a 1/18 scale model in a water channel
using pure water at 15◦C. The real submarine will travel at 3m.s−1. At what speed should the water
channel be run? 7 marks

QUESTION 7
a.A spillway is designed to control the overflow from a dam as shown in the figure below. The flow
rate from the dam over the spillway is 2.9m3s−1 per metre of width of the spillway. A hydraulic
jump occurs downstream of the spillway. What will be the depth of the fluid y2 downstream of the
hydraulic jump? Assume that energy losses over the spillway can be neglected. 8 marks

b.A sluice gate is fitted across a rectangular horizontal irrigation channel to control the depth of the
flow in the channel. The channel is 2m wide. A flow rate 3.6m3s−1 is required after the sluice gate.
What range of depths are acceptable after the sluice gate if a hydraulic jump is to be avoided? 7
marks
