INST RUCT IONS T O CANDIDAT ES :

1. Attempt any FIVE question(s), ea ch que stion c arrie s 12 marks.

1. The pressure-density relation for water is given by following equation :

Pressure / (atmospheric pressure) = 3001 × [density/(density at atmospheric conditions)]7 -

3000.

Determine the isothermal bulk modulus of elasticity and compressibility of water at 2, 30

and 110 atmospheric pressure. Neglect effect of temperature.

2. A plane gate (hinged at datum of reservoir) having length of 4 m is inclined at an angle α

with the datum. The weight of the gate is 8000 N. If free liquid level of reservoir is at
height ‘h’ from datum, find the relation between h and α for stable equilibrium of the gate.

3. A cylindrical tank partially filled with water rotates at constant angular speed ‘ω’ about
vertical axis. Assume that the water behaves as a rigid body rotation, find the equation of
free surface of water. From the equation obtained, suggest the profile of water in the
container.

4. A dye is injected at a point A (x0, y0, z0) in the flow field. Find its equation at t = 2t0, where
dye injection time is t0. Also find locus of fluid particle that passes through point A at t = t0.
x
The components of velocity are given by : u = ,  = 0 and w = 0.
t  t0

5. A fireman can hold the nozzle in such a way that it can deliver water at a height of 3 m
from the ground. He has to strike the jet at a height of 50 m on a window from the ground
with discharge rate of 30 liter per sec through a nozzle of 15 mm radius. Estimate the
horizontal distance from the window from where he should strike to extinguish the fire.

6. A jet has to fly at speed of 400 m/s at a height of 10000 m above sea level (T = – 45 C and
P = 0.2981 atm). For testing in a pressurized wind tunnel at 15 C, A 1:20 model is
designed. For complete dynamic similarity what pressure and velocity be used in the

T 2
tunnel? Take   , Es = p, p = RT, T is in K and  is ratio of sp. heats.
(T  117)

7. Explain various types of orifices and mouthpieces with neat sketch. What is function of
them? Where are they utilized practically?

8. A pipe with 0.2 m dia and 2 km long connects two water bodies, having 20 m as the
difference in water level.

a) Find discharge in liters/min. If an additional pipe of same dia and 1.2 km in length is
attached in parallel and in later part of existing pipe

b) Find increase in discharge. Take coefficient of discharge ‘f ’ = 0.015.
