Hazardous area classification
is the process of identifying areas where
there is a risk of explosion or fire due to
the presence of flammable gases, vapors,
dusts, or fibers. These areas are classified
according to the likelihood of the hazard
being present and the severity of the
consequences if an explosion or fire
were to occur.

This system is used in the United States
and Canada. It classifies areas into three
classes: Class I, Class II, and Class III.

This system is used in Europe and many
other countries around the world. It
classifies areas into five zones: Zone 0,
Zone 1, Zone 2, Zone 20, and Zone 21.

The zone system is based on the
following factors:

• The type of hazardous material present.

• The quantity of the hazardous material.
• The ventilation in the area.
• The potential sources of ignition.
