9.12 Testing Procedure For Earthing System

The purpose ofthis procedure is to define the step by step method to implement the correct practices
for the testing of earthing System through the guidelines contained herein so as to ensure that the job
execution complies with the projecf requirements and serves the intended function to safisfactory level

9.12.1 Tools / Equipment Required

i. Portable Hand tools

ir Step Ladder Insulation
iir. Tester l\4ulti meter
iv Earth Megger
The earthing system consist of a dedicated earth bus bar for each floor in the electrical room where all
the earthrng leads of the respective floor equipment are terminated The earth bus bars of individual
floors shall be connected to the main bus bar in the ground floor which shall drain into the earth pits-
9.12.2 Testing Procedure
Ensure that the Earthing System installation is complete and mechanical completion is
approved & allcomments on the installalion are incorporated
Ensure that alltypes ofgrounding to the grounding electrodes are as per acceptable codes.
Ensure that no damage has occurred between mechanical completions & pre-commissioning.
Ensure proper termination ofthe earlhing cables in the floor bus bar & the main bus bars.
Ensure all contact surfaces of all ground connections are thoroughly cleaned.
Replace damaged cables, if any
Ensure the installation is in line with the approved shop drawings & manufactureis
recommendations

Ensure allthe earih bars are properly fixed to the wall & are freely accesslble
Ensure the containment for the earth cables are properly supporled & lhe earth cables are
properly dressed
Ensure that all wall / slab penetrations of the cab es/trays are sealed with approved fire
sealant at each fire barrier penetration
Ensure thai allthe pre commissioning checks are carried out successfully
Ensure the earth bars are in level using spirit level
Check the continuity ofthe earth cables from the respeclive equipment to the floor earth bar
Check the continuity oflhe earth cables from the respeclive floor earth bars to lhe main earth
bar ofthe respective building.
Check lhe continuity of the earth cables from the respective rnain earth bar oflhe building to
the earih pits.
( Check the earth resistance values at the earth Dils individuallv & ensure that the value is less
than one ohm.
The term "ground" is defined as a conducting connection by which a circuit or equipment is
connected io the earth The connection is used to establish and maintain. as closelv as
possible, the potential oflhe earth on the circuii or equipment connected to it A "ground"
consists of a grounding conduclor, a bonding connector, its grounding elec{rodes, and the soil
in contact with ihe electrode
ldeally, to maintain a reference po{ential for inslrument safety, protect against static electricity,
and limit the system to frame voltage for operalor safety, a ground resistance will be zero
ohms In reality this value cannot be obtained
Resulls of inspectrons and tests shalJ be recorded and available upon an inspeclor's request
The most reliable post-installation lesting procedure involves the fall-of-potential (three-point)
method With the help of a digital ground resistance meter, hvo auxiliary electrodes are driven
into the soil at predetermined distances - as per tesling specifications - in a shaight line from
the ground rod under test The meter supplies a conslanl current between the ground rod
berng tested and the most remote electrode. The Three Point Vibroground, with a range of at
least 0 to 300 ohms, shall be used to perform these iests Manufacturer's instructions for
( usinq this instrument wll be followed
