Northern Coalfields Ltd - Ministry of Coal
Inaugurates CSR initiatives in Singrauli District
• Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL), an arm of Coal India Limited (CIL) under the Ministry of Coal has launched
various CSR schemes and projects focused on village infrastructure, education, skill development, women
empowerment, employment generation, sanitation and provision of clean drinking water amounting to Rs. 2.25 Crore
to benefit the villagers of Singrauli. These pro-people programmes have been launched as part of Azadi Ka Amrit
Mahotsav(AKAM) celebrations.

• A new road constructed under NCL-CSR at a cost of ₹ 1.6 crores in Semuar Panchayat benefiting about ten
thousand villagers living in Pali, Semur and nearby places has also been inaugurated

• To further empower local women/girls and make them self-reliant, sewing machines and skill certificates were
distributed to 27 women/ girls, trained in the centres under the ongoing skill development programme of NCL.

• As part of ensuring modern education amenities in remote villages, eight sets of Smart TV and computers were
distributed to nearby Govt. schools. Advanced laboratory equipment were also distributed to four government
schools, helping more than 500 students to get practical knowledge in Science.

• NCL is Singrauli based MiniratnaCompany under the Ministry of Coal and operates with 10 highly mechanized
opencast coal mines and accounts for 15 percent of national coal production. The companycontributed over 115
Million Tonnes of coal to the nation during the last financial year.

Doppler Weather Radar (DWR) & Indigenous GPS based Pilot Sonde at Indian Meteorological
Office in Jammu

• In addition to DWR system installed today, Dr Jitendra Singh referred to several new scientific
establishments set up in the region during the last few years under the Modi government which
included North India's first Biotech Industrial Park at Kathua, North India's first Space/ISRO Centre
at Central University, India's lavender led Purple Revolution and first Cannabis Medicinal Plant
launched by IIIM Jammu, the first -ever National Institute of High Altitude Medicine at Bhaderwah,
the first- ever Mega -quintal Seed Processing Plant at Kathua, latest Weather forecast instrument
installed at SanjhiChhat for convenience of Vaishano Devi pilgrims, high altitude Radio Relay
Station at Patnitop,etc

Coal India Ltd Launches New Software For
Enhanced Assessment of Coal Resources
• Coal India Ltd (CIL), under the Ministry of Coal has launched a new software named “Spectral Enhancement”
(SPE), which will help in identifying thin coal seams under the earth crust and improve assessment of coal
resources using seismic survey during coal exploration process.

• The launch of SPE software assumes significance as the present seismic survey techniques for coal resource
exploration have limitations in identifying the thin coal seams under the earth, which will now be possible as
this new software helps in enhancing resolution of seismic signals leading to delineation of thinnest coal
seams.

• CIL’s research and development (R&D) arm Central Mine Planning and Design Institute (CMPDI) has
developed this first of its kind software in association with Gujrat Energy Research and Management Institute
(GERMI) and the company will also file for its copyright protection.

• This ‘Made in India’ software will also help to save time and cost of coal exploration and thus boost the
mission of Atmanirbhar Bharat in coal production.

• CIL CMD Shri Pramod Agrawal launched the software in the presence of the R&D Board of CIL comprising of
senior directors and expert members from the reputed organizations and institutions.
• CIL accounts for 80 per cent of India’s coal output.

to Spread Awareness on Sanitation

• Under the nation wide celebrations of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav (AKAM), Bharat
Coking Coal Ltd.( BCCL), a Miniratna Company under the Ministry of Coal has
organized a special programme to spread awareness about sanitation and
COVID-19 related precautionary measures.

• As part of the ongoing drive, the CSR Department of BCCL distributed 125
packets of hand sanitisers and face masks to the residents of Algoria Basti, a
predominantly SC/ ST/ OBC village in PootkiBalihari (PB) Area of Dhanbad,
Jharkhand.

Maritime Bilateral Exercise ‘Simbex’

• The 28th edition of Singapore-India Maritime Bilateral Exercise


(SIMBEX) was conducted

• The Indian Navy was represented by Guided Missile Destroyer INS


Ranvijay with a ship borne helicopter, ASW Corvette INS Kiltan and
Guided Missile Corvette INS Kora and one P8I Long Range Maritime
Patrol Aircraft.

• Initiated in 1994, SIMBEX is the Indian Navy’s longest uninterrupted


bilateral maritime exercise with any foreign navy.

DAHD & MoRD signed MoU for Rural Economic Growth
• Memorandum of Understanding was inked between Department of Animal
husbandry & Dairying of Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying
and Ministry of Rural Development for rural economic growth.

• A new accredited model namely ‘A-HELP (Accredited Agent for Health and
Extension of Livestock Production)’ is introduced which will be implemented pan-
India.

• This accreditation will be provided to the individuals already trained under DAY-
NRLM (Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-NRLM) for livestock (Pashusakhis) by
providing further training as A-HELP workers.

• Central Government approved the implementation of a Special Livestock Sector


Package for focused development of AHD in next 5 years starting from 2021-22.

CBDT Notified IT Rules for Taxable Interest on PF Account
• The Central Board of Direct Taxes notified new rules regarding the taxation on the ‘interest income’ which is earned
through the Employees Provident Fund) contributions, beyond Rs 2.5 lakh a year and Rs 5 lakh a year.

• ₹2.5 lakh annual contribution limit shall apply for EPF members, while in General or Statutory Provident Fund (GPF)
or other Provident Fund where there is no contribution from the employer, the threshold has been set at ₹5 lakh.

• The government has made amendments over the Income-tax (IT) named IT (25th Amendment) Rules, 2021 to
include the new IT rule (Rule 9D) over PF income.

• The government had in the Finance Act of 2021 introduced a new provision that makes interest accrued in the PF
account on contribution above ₹2.5 lakh a year taxable.

• The new income tax Rules on PF income will be applicable for contributions made from FY22 onwards (i.e. from
April 2021).

• As per the data of the Ministry of Textiles, more than 1,500 artisans have been
benefited by training in 63 Samarth Training Centres.

• The Scheme for Capacity Building in Textile Sector was named SAMARTH.

driven, placement oriented skilling programmes to handicrafts artisans to create
employment in textile and related sectors.

• SAMARTH was formed to train 10 lakh persons in 3 years (2017-20) with an


estimated budget of 1300 crore.

WHO Hub for Pandemic & Epidemic Intelligence
• The World Health Organization as a part of its Health Emergencies Programme
has set up first hub of its kind ‘WHO Hub for Pandemic and Epidemic Intelligence’
which was inaugurated

• The hub will receive an initial investment of $100 million from the Government of
Germany and will be led by Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, the current DG of the Nigeria
Centre for Disease Control

• The hub will currently operate from a centre provided by the Charite –
Universitatsmedizin Berlin, a University.

• MoU was also created between the WHO and the Robert Koch Institute of
Germany under which RKI scientists along with WHO experts and other global
partners will work in this hub

“The Atlas of Mortality and Economic Losses from
Weather, Climate and Water Extremes (1970–2019)”
• World Meteorological Organization has released a report titled, “The Atlas of Mortality and
Economic Losses from Weather, Climate and Water Extremes (1970–2019)” which states that
number of disasters, such as floods and heatwaves, driven by climate change have increased
fivefold over the past 50 years.

• There were more than 11,000 reported disasters attributed to these hazards globally, with just over
two million deaths and $3.64 trillion in losses.

• The recent hurricane named’ Ida’ in the US Gulf Coast, considered as the costliest weather
disaster.

PFRDA Increased the NPS Entry Age from 65 to 70 Years
• The Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority increased the maximum age for joining the National Pension System
(NPS) from 65 years to 70 years of age.

• Any Indian Citizen, resident or non-resident and Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) between the age of 65-70 years are eligible to
join NPS and continue their NPS Account up to the age of 75 years.

• The customers could exercise the choice of Pension Fund (PF) and Asset Allocation with the maximum equity exposure of 15
percent and 50 percent under Auto and Active Choice respectively.

Manipur launched Electronic Inner Line Permit (e-ILP) portal
• Manipur virtually launched an electronic Inner Line permit (ILP) or e-ILP platform at Imphal, Jiribam
and Mao.

• It is developed by Cubeten Technologies Pvt. Ltd to monitor the entry, exit and tracking of visitors to
the state under the Manipur Inner Line Permit Rules, 2019 with immediate effect.

• The purpose of e-ILP is to protect the identity of its people.

• With this portal, a person outside the state can apply online for ILP and get the permit from issuing
centres at Imphal Airport, Mao Gate, Jiribam Railway Station and Jiribam ILP Exit Counter after
proper onsite verification.

• The reason behind this development is the overstaying of visitors without renewing of permit.

• ILP is an official travel document issued by the Government of India to allow inward travel of an
Indian citizen into a protected area or state for a limited period.

Plastics Pact (IPP)’ to promote a circular system for plastics.

• The pact was launched by the British High Commission in India, Alexander Ellis, at the 16th Sustainability Summit
2021 of the CII.

• India became the 1st Asian country to develop a plastics pact.

• The Asian and Pacific Centre for the Development of Disaster Information Management, the regional institution of the
United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific has released the report on sand and dust storms
named ‘Sand and Dust Storms Risk Assessment in Asia and the Pacific’.

• As per the risk assessments of the report, more than 500 million people in India are exposed to medium and high levels of
poor air quality due to sand and dust storms.

• India has 1,584 gigawatt-hours (GWh) energy loss in 2019, in economic terms, the impact is greater than USD 107 million
a year.

• Around 60 million people from the cities of Karachi (Pakistan), Lahore (Pakistan), and Delhi have experienced more than
170 dusty days a year in 2019 due to sand and dust storms.

• More than 80 percent of the populations of Turkmenistan, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Iran are exposed to medium
and high levels of poor air quality due to sand and dust storms.

• 6 million residents of 8 cities (3 in China, 2 in the Islamic Republic of Iran, 2 in Pakistan, and 1 in Uzbekistan) across the
Asia Pacific region were breathing air with unhealthy concentrations of particulate matter every day for at least 10 months
in 2019.

India finalises deal to procure over AK-203 assault rifles from Russia

• India finalised deal with Russia for the purchase of around 70,000 AK-203 assault
rifles to replace the existing Indian Small Arms System assault rifle.

• This comes as a result of the Inter-Governmental Agreement signed between


India & Russia to manufacture rifles, where a joint venture called Indo-Russian
Rifles Private Limited (IRRPL) was formed with 50.5% of the company owned by
Ordnance Factory Board of India and the rest belongs to Rosoboron Exports and
Kalashnikov of Russia.IRRPL was set up at Korwa in Uttar Pradesh.

Krivak class stealth frigates to be delivered in Mid-2023
• United Shipbuilding Corporation of Russia confirmed that the delivery of first
Krivak or Talwar Class stealth frigate to India by the mid of 2023

• In 2016, India and Russia signed an agreement for for four Krivak Class stealth
Frigates.

• The two will be procured directly from Russia while the other 2 will be built in Goa

• Delhi launched the “Business Blasters” programme, which will be implemented in
all the Government run schools across Delhi. This program aims to inculcate
entrepreneurship mindset at the school-level, it is an initiative under Delhi’s

• Under the Business Blasters programme, Classes XI and XII of Delhi government

Conservation reserve in Palk Bay
• Tamil Nadu announced the plan to establish India’s first-ever Dugong (also known as Sea cows)
Conservation Reserve in the marine region of Palk Bay, in the southern coastal region of Tamil
Nadu.

• The conservation reserve aims to protect the Dugong and its habitat.

• The dugong, a herbivorous marine mammal that is one of the four living species of the order
Sirenia, is facing extinction due to water pollution, habitat loss and loss of seagrass.
