Title: Testing the difference between vinegar and muriatic acid

Problem Statement: Plan and design an experiment that one can undertake in the laboratory to
determine which bottle contains the vinegar and which contains the muriatic acid

Hypothesis:
● Experiment 1: If a lower pH value is detected, then the solution is muriatic acid.
● Experiment 2: If a vigorous reaction occurs, then the solution is muriatic acid
● Experiment 3: If the density is lower, then The solution is vinegar.
Aim:
● Experiment 1: ph Tester
○ To investigate if the pH value can be used to find vinegar and muriatic acid.
● Experiment 2: Reactivity with metal
○ To investigate if a solution is muriatic acid or vinegar based on how vigorous the
reaction is.
● Experiment 3: Density
○ To investigate if the comparison of density can be used to determine muriatic acid
and vinegar
Material/Apparatus:

● Experiment 1:
○ Bottle A
○ Bottle B
○ Labels
○ pH paper
○ Test tube
○ Pencil
○ Measuring cylinders
○ Pipette
○ pH scale
○ Tweezers

● Experiment 2:
○ Bottle A
○ Bottle B
○ Labels
○ Test tube

○ Pencil
○ Measuring cylinders
○ Pipette
○ Zinc

● Experiment 3:
○ Bottle A
○ Bottle B
○ Labels
○ Pencil
○ Measuring cylinders
○ Pipette
○ Distilled water
○ Electronic scale

Procedure:

● Experiment 1: pH Tester
1. Take two test tubes and label one as "A" and the other as "B."
2. Carefully measure 10cm3 of bottle A using a pipette.
3. Carefully pour the 10cm3 of bottle A into test tube A.
4. Carefully hold the pH paper with tweezers in the test tube for 10 seconds and then
take it out.
5. Take note of the color change and compare it to the pH scale.
6. Repeat steps 2:5 for bottle B and test tube B.

● Experiment 2: Reactivity with metal

1. Take two test tubes and label one as "A" and the other as "B."
2. Carefully measure 10cm3 of bottle A using a pipette.
3. Carefully pour the 10cm3 of bottle A into test tube A.
4. Take a small piece of zinc metal and add it to test tube A.
5. Observe any changes that occur.
6. Repeat steps 2:5 for bottle B and test tube B.

● Experiment 3: Density
1. Take two test tubes and label one as "A" and the other as "B."
2. Take down the weight of the empty test tube A.
3. In test tube A add 30cm3 of distilled water.
4. Weigh test tube A.
5. Subtract the weight of test tube A from test tube A filled with distilled water.

6. Carefully measure 10cm3 of bottle A using a pipette.

7. Carefully pour the 10cm3 of bottle A into test tube A.
8. Weigh test tube A.
9. Subtract the weight of test tube A in step 5 from test tube A with acid.
10. Calculate the density of liquid A by dividing the mass by the volume.
11. Repeat steps 2:10 for bottle B and test tube B.
Precautions:
● For all experiments: The chemicals are being taken care of and used carefully. Protective
gear is worn.
Variables:
● Controlled:
○ Experiment 1: ph Tester
■ Use the same type of pH paper for all measurements to maintain
consistency.
○ Experiment 2: Reactivity with metal
■ Use the same amount of zinc in each reaction to maintain consistency.
○ Experiment 3: Density
■ Use the same type and calibrated electronic scale to maintain consistency.
● Manipulated:
○ Experiment 1: ph Tester
■ The unknown substances in bottle A and bottle B.
○ Experiment 2: Reactivity with metal
■ The unknown substances in bottle A and bottle B.
○ Experiment 3: Density
■ The unknown substances in bottle A and bottle B.
● Responding:
○ Experiment 1: ph Tester
■ PH number of bottle A and bottle B
○ Experiment 2: Reactivity with metal
■ The rate and how vigorously it reacts.
○ Experiment 3: Density
■ The higher and lower densities.
Expected results:
● Experiment 1: ph Tester

○ I expect that the pH paper will change color to red When dipped in the
hydrochloric acid and orange when dipped in the vinegar
● Experiment 2: Reactivity with metal
○ I expect the solution with the hydrochloric acid would react more vigorously with
the zinc than the vinegar.
● Experiment 3: Density
○ I expect that the higher density will be hydrochloric acid and the lower density to
be vinegar.
