Description
The HMBD 50B was designed to eliminate condensate, and other non-corrosive liquids from high-
pressure compressed air systems.

Condensate forms when compressed air is cooled. It forms in the pipeline and collects in the lowest
parts of the compressed air system (pressure vessels or pipeline). To remove the condensate from
the system, it is necessary to install a drain valve.

HMBD 50 B is mechanical device used to automatically drain the condensate from the system. It
needs to be installed in locations where condensate accumulates. When a sufficient quantity of
condensate accumulates in the drain tank, the condensate raises up a floater, which activates the
servo valve. The servo valve opens the outlet until the condensate level falls. Operation of the HMBD
50 B can be checked at any time with a test button on the front. When the test button is rotated, it
activates the servo valve.

HMBD 50 B can be used in different applications such as pressure vessels, dryers, filters, drains, etc.
The robust housing of condensate drain is made of aluminium/stainless steel which protect from
external influences.

Safety instructions
 Installation and maintenance work may only be carried out when the device is not
under pressure. To depressurize the device, close the ball valve and rotate the test
button on device until the pressure in it drops.
 Installation and maintenance work may only be carried out by trained and
experienced personnel.
 Installation and maintenance workers must use proper safety / protection
equipment (e.g. protection gloves, protection goggles, …)
 Installation and maintenance work may only be carried out when electrical power
supply is disconnected.
 Do not exceed maximal operating pressure or operating temperature range (see data
label).
 Do not use the device in hazardous areas with potentially explosive atmospheres.
 Use original spare parts only.
 Use the device for the appropriate purpose only.

Appropriate use

HMBD 50 condensate drain is intended exclusively for the following purpose:

 Draining condensate from compressed air system (air compressors, air

receivers/pressure vessels, air dryers and air filters).

Any other form of use or one going beyond this shall be considered as inappropriate. We shall have
no liability whatsoever for any damage incurred as a result.

8
Operation

HMBD 50 works with compressed air, which is in the system from which we wish to drain the
condensate. The HMBD 50 minimum operating pressure is 8 bar (116 psi). When there is no pressure
in the system the valve is normally open. The valve opens automatically if the pressure drops to
below 1 bar (14 psi). The valve can also open at higher pressure. The opening of the valve depends
on many factors, such as wear and the speed of the pressure drop.

The condensate enters the HMBD 50 through the INLET connector, which is located on the upper
side of the housing. Condensate flows into a reservoir. When the level of the condensate rises the
float is lifted. When the condensate level is high enough, the float unblocks a nozzle and seal thus
pressurizing the interior of the servo valve. The pressure pushes a piston, which opens and closes the
OUTLET connector. Through this OUTLET, the condensate is discharged from the reservoir. When the
level of the condensate drops the float drops whit it and closes the nozzle. Air enters the servo valve
through a side hole and then the piston returns to its start position and thus closes the drain OUTLET.

9
On the front side of the HMBD 50 is a TEST button, which if rotated in a clockwise direction activates
the servo valve, which opens the outlet and drains the condensate. This can be done at any time. The
button can also be used as a release of pressure from the system. But for longer release times of
compressed air from the system, we recommend disconnecting all devices from the OUTLET
connection, such as traps, oil separators, piping, ...

It is forbidden to use force or other tools to rotate the test button.

Installation guidelines

Warning

Before installing the device, check that the system is not under
pressure. Wear necessary personal protective equipment and
keep folow the safety rules when working with pressure
equipment.

 Before connecting the drain, blow compressed air through the piping in order to thoroughly
clean out any impurities within it.
 If the pipe line system is new, leave drain some time to work. Then open the drain and clean
all components (yearly service).
 It is recommended to install a ball valve between the device and the system. This is done to
ensure easy maintenance work on the device without the needed to empty the entire system.
In addition to the ball valve it is also recommended to add strainer, and then the nipple
tubing (16) to allow the flow of air upward. For example, the recommended installation
shown below fig.
 The drain valve is normally open. This means that when there is no pressure in the system
the valve is open. The valve automatically closes when the pressure rises to at least 10bar.

Ball valve
Strainer

Nipple (16)

HMBD 50 must be installed so that the bottom side of the casing is a close to level as possible.
Although a maximum divergence of ±5 ° is allowed.

11
 Do not connect several condensed water sources to one drain device because air would
bypass filtering (left). Instead, each drain where water condensate collects must have its own
condensate drain device (right).

 Drainage piping must be built without traps that would trap air in the HMBD 50 and prevent
condensed water to enter it (left). Additional venting would not help because debris could
collects in the lowest part of drainage pipe and clog it (right).

 Horizontal drainage pipes must be inclined so that air can escape from the HMBD 50 and that
the debris is flushed toward the HMBD 50 (left). When horizontal drainage pipes are long,
venting should be built (right).

 The output port should be dimensioned to withstand the pressure, which is in the system. It
is highly recommended that the waste condensate from the OUTLET connection is treated.
Oil can be separated from the condensate with a separator of oil/water like the WOS series.

12
Maintenance

Warning

Before maintenance depressurize the device and keep to the

safety rules when working with pressure equipment.

Weekly:

 Rotate the "Test" button and manually drain the accumulated condensate until air begins to
blow from the drain. If a significant amount of water (more than 0.5 liters) exits the valve
then the drain must be thoroughly cleaned.

Yearly:

 Disassemble drain and clean all components. Do a visual inspection of seals. Removing the
seals from the grooves is not recommended because there is a high probability of damage
when removing. Do not use solvents to clean rubber components.

Service:

It is recommended to clean the reservoir at least once a year. Sealing elements are subject to wear,
which depends on various operating parameters such as pressure, temperature, dirt content, etc. It is
also recommended to change seals.

Spare parts:

Replacement seals are available on demand. Please contact your distributor or manufacturer.

13
Troubleshooting
 Leaks from hole at bottom of artist but HMBD 50 is working normally.
In case condensate and gas is leaking out check the pipe 44 (20) and the seals the tube (12).
You can also check the elbow (18) where the tube (20) is fixed and the surface of the seal.
 Leaking gas at the OUTLET connector but the HMBD 50 is working normally.
Check the nozzle seal (35). The seal must not show any signs of wear otherwise, replace
nozzle seal (35).
 Test button does not work
Check the pressure in the system.
The HMBD 50 can be flooded and needs cleaning. If this error keeps repeating, check the
float
Spring(14).
 When at startup the HMBD 50 valve does not close.
The pressure in the system must be at least 10 bar. There must also be enough airflow.
If the pressure is greater than 10 bar, and if the valve is still not closed, check the nozzle seal
(35).

If these suggestions don't help, and for other defects, please contact the distributor or
manufacturer.
