Mayor Adams is expected to make acting NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban the
official head of the nation’s largest police force on Monday, according to sources with
knowledge of the plan.

Caban has been leading the department on an acting basis since his predecessor
Keechant Sewell left on June 30 after abruptly announcing her resignation .

Adams is expected to make the announcement at the 40th Precinct stationhouse in the
Bronx, where Caban started his police career in 1991, a source said.

Caban would be the NYPD’s first Latino commissioner, after Sewell was the first Black
woman in the role .

Adams’ office did not answer a request for comment.

“The mayor didn’t want to go through another yearlong global search to replace
LATEST
Sewell,” a city government source told the Daily News on Sunday. “ Caban is the
New York
obvious choice because he was next in line, and he’ll do whatever the mayor wants.”

Caban is viewed as an ally of Adams, a former NYPD captain who won the 2021
mayoral election on a tough-on-crime platform.

“Commissioner Caban is a consummate professional with over three decades of service

in the NYPD,” Adams said earlier this month on 1010 WINS. “I know the hardworking
men and women of our city’s Police Department have a strong leader in place until a
more formal announcement is made in the coming weeks.”

Caban got his start in the NYPD patrolling the mean streets of the South Bronx, getting
promoted to sergeant in 1994, according to the department.

Over the following years, he steadily climbed the ranks, with stints in areas including
East Harlem and Patrol Borough Brooklyn North.

Prior to becoming acting commissioner, Caban was first deputy commissioner focusing
on personnel management, discipline and related issues.

His latest leadership role comes amid a challenging period for the Adams
administration.

The high number of resignations around a year and a half into his tenure include Chief
Housing Officer Jessica Katz , Social Services Commissioner Gary Jenkins and First
Deputy Mayor Lorraine Grillo .
