1. Why do the shiny surface of most metals becomes dull in time ?

Ans. The shiny surface of most metals becomes dull in time because of reacting
with oxygen to form metal oxide.

2. Write a word equation for the reaction which occurs when aluminium is burned
in oxygen.

Aluminium + oxygen aluminium oxide

3. Potassium , sodium and lithium are stored under oil, why ?

Ans. These all metals are very reactive . they are stored under oil to prevent
reacting with water and oxygen, so they keep longer.

4. Complete the word equation below :

Lithium + oxygen lithium oxide

Lithium + water lithium hydroxide + hydrogen

Zinc + steam zinc oxide + hydrogen

Zinc + nitric acid zinc nitrate + hydrogen

5. Write five physical properties of metal .

Ans . i) All the metals are good conductors of heat and electricity.

ii) Metals are solid at room temperature except mercury.

iii. The melting and boiling points of metals are generally high.

iv. They are malleable, ductile

v. they are hard and strong

6. (a) What do you mean by alloy ? give four examples.

Ans. An alloy is a mixture of one metal with one or more other metals
or non-metals to improve its properties. Examples: stainless steel,
duralumin, solder, brass.

(b) Explain the following by referring to the properties of the metals.

Hot water pipes are made out of copper. copper does not react with boiling water
and cheaper than other unreactive metals.

Aluminium is used to make cooking Aluminium is good conductor of heat,

utensils malleable, non-toxic

Gold and silver are used for making They are shiny and unreactive, malleable ,
jewellary. ductile.
