Materials – Metals and non metals

I. Very short answer questions

1. What happens when a copper vessel is exposed to moist air for a long time?

Ans: when the copper vessel on reacting slowly with carbon dioxide and water ,it losses its
shine on being exposed to moist air for a long time.

2. What is formed when non-metals react with oxygen?

Ans: acidic oxides are formed when non metals react with oxygen

II. Short answer questions

1. What happens when the following metals react with dilute hydrochloric acid?
A. Magnesium. B. Aluminium

Ans : A. Magnesium reacts with dilute hydrochloric acid to form magnesium chloride and hydrogen gas

B. Aluminium reacts with dilute hydrochloric acid to form aluminium chloride

and hydrogen gas
2. Objects made of silver become black with the passage of time. explain.

Ans: objects made of silver become black with the passage of time due to the formation of a
thin silver sulphide layer on there surface by the action of hydrogen sulphide present in the
air.

3. What is meant by reactivity series of metals?

Ans: arrangement of metals in a vertical column in the order of their decreasing reactivities
is called reactivity series of metals.

4. Golden silver are used for making jewellery. Give reason

Ans: gold and silver are used for making jewellery because they are lustrous, highly
malleable and ductile

5. A layer of metal M is deposited on iron objects during galvanization.

A. Identify M
Ans - Zinc
B. What is the significance of galvanization

Ans: galvanization helps to prevent the metal from corrosion by depositing a layer
of zinc on the surface of the object.

III. Long answer questions

1. List any five physical properties that distinguish metals from nonmetals.

Ans: i. Metals are solid at room temperature except for mercury

ii. Metals are malleable and ductile

III. Metals are lustrous.

iv. Metals are good conductors of heat

v. Metals are generally hard except for sodium and potassium.

2. List any three physical and two chemical properties that demonstrates the metallic status of copper.

Ans: Physical properties:

i. Copper is malleable
ii. Copper is ductile
iii. Copper is a good conductor of heat and electricity.

3 . A. How does aluminium react with sodium hydroxide solution? Give the chemical reaction

B. How do you prove that a colourless gas is evolved during this reaction

4. When and ion object is left in damp air it gets covered with a reddish brown flaky substance.

A. Name the redish brown flaky substance

Ans: rust

B. How is the substance formed?

Ans: when and iron object is left in damp air for some time it gets covered with a reddish brown flaky
substance. It is formed when iron metal combines with oxygen and water.

C. How is its formation prevented? List any two methods.

Ans: i. Oil grease or paint is applied on the surface because it keeps the metal away from air and
moisture

ii. A layer of zinc is deposited on the surface of iron object by dipping it in molten zinc. This process is
known as galvanization

5. Ram Ram stores copper sulphate solution in a container made of iron. He observes certain changes
after a few hearts. What changes does he observe?

Ans: on storing copper sulphate solution in container made of iron, Ram absorbs that portion of the
container with copper sulphate solution turns reddish brown. This is because a layer of copper gets
deposited over the surface of iron container. In is more reactive than copper so it displaces copper from
the solution of copper sulphate and the colour of the solution slowly changes from Bluetooth green due
to formation of iron sulphate.

Fe. + CuSO4 ------ Cu. + FeSO4

7. Give reason for the following

A. Wood is not used to make wires

Ans: wires cannot be drawn from wood because it is non ductile and also an insulator

B. Oxygen is not brittle.

Ans: oxygen is not brittle because it is a gas

C. Diamonds are used for making jewellery.

Ans: Because it sparkles

8. A metal M has assigning appearance and reacts with hot water. It also reacts with dilute hydrochloric
acid to evolve hydrogen gas. Identify the metal M. Give a reason to support your answer

Ans: metal M is magnesium will stop magnesium reacts with hot water. It also reacts with dilute
hydrochloric acid.

Mg. + H2O. ------ MgO + H2

Mg + 2 HCl. ------ MgCl2 + H2

9. A. Priya has to heat food. According to you, which vessel should she use silver or copper give reason to
support your answer.
Ans: Priya should use copper vessel as it has high thermal conductivity and is more easily available than
silver.

B. Which metal would you use and why if you had to do household electrical wiring?

Ans: copper is used for making electrical wires cables coils for various electrical appliances because it is a
good conductor of electricity.
