Chapter – Cell- Structure and Function

GRADE 8
1. 1
.

Answers:
1. Nucleus
2. Cellulose
3. Ribosomes
4. Cytoplasm
5. Leucoplasts
6. Lysosomes
7. Amoeba
8. Vacuoles

2. Nucleus is known as “brain of the cell”. Justify.

The nucleus is called the "brain" of the cell because it holds the information needed to conduct most
of the cell's functions. Also it carry genetic information, which directs the synthesis of proteins and
other cellular processes.

3. Draw a neat plant cell and label the parts given below:
a. Structure which stores excess water
b. Outer layer which provides the support.
c. Kitchen of the cell
d. Structure involved in release of energy.
e. Brain of the cell.

4. It is said that “Animals do not have Plastids, but they depend on them”. Explain.
Animals do not have Plastids, but they depend on plastids as they consume
plants and plants contain plastids with which they prepare food.

5. How does a cell show division of labour? Is there any parallelism between the working of the cell
and our society?

My challenge Question – E1
Which of the following cellular components are not shared between plant and animal cells? Why?
Mitochondria, Endoplasmic Reticulum, Nucleus, Golgi apparatus, Chloroplasts,
Lysosomes, Vacuoles, Cytoplasm, Cell membrane, Cell wall.

My challenge Question – E2
Which cell type in human lacks a nucleus? Which function would this cell be unable to carry out?

My challenge Question – E3
Cell division is an essential stage, and eventual result, of every organic cell cycle which results in
the formation of haploid and diploid cells. Compare and contrast between haploid and diploid
cells.
