• Learning Objective:

To identify different cell organelles and their functions.

Success Criteria

• All must be able to identify the different

organelles present in a cell.

• Most should be able to relate the structure of

the cells with its functions.

• Some would be able to draw the cell

organelles and can describe their importance for
cell.
Starter:

What does a cell consist of?

CELLS ARE MADE OF ORGANELLES

•Organelles are specialized parts of a cell.  Each organelle has a different

job.  The word organelle literally means little organ.  Some organelles
you need to know are listed below.

CELL ORGANELLES

•Cell Membrane
•Cytoplasm
•Nucleus
•Mitochondria
•Ribosome
•Cell wall
•Chloroplast

Cell and cell structures
Cell Membrane

 Cell membrane is a very thin layer of protein and fat.

 Allows food, oxygen, & water into the cell & waste
products out of the cell. It is partially permeable.
 Inside the cell membrane is a jelly-like substance
called cytoplasm.
Cytoplasm

 Clear jelly like fluid inside cell membrane constantly flows

 Contains many substances dissolved in it, especially proteins
 about 70% is water in many cells.
 Many metabolic reactions takes place here
Nucleus

 The brain of a cell

 Contains the Genetic material
 Usually the largest organelle
Mitochondria

 Power house of the cell

 Production of energy molecules occurs here.
 Cells that use a lot of energy have larger number of
mitochondria: Eg: muscle cells, nerve cells, Sperm
cells
Ribosomes

 Found in all type of cells

 Site of protein synthesis.
Vacuoles

 Space in the cell surrounded by the membrane and are

filled with sap
 Stores food, discharges wastes
Cell Wall

 Surrounds the cell surface membrane

 Cell wall is made up of cellulose
 Gives the plant cell a fixed regular shape
Chloroplasts

 Chloroplasts containing chlorophyll pigment

 Green coloured
 Absorption of sunlight
 Required to carry out photosynthesis
MAIN TASK
In the next given table—
Match each structure of the cell with its role.
Roles of each structure in the cell
Structure Role
Nucleus Support the cell and keeps its shape.

Mitochondria Controls the activity of the cell.

Chloroplast Respiration occurs here releasing energy.

Ribosome Full of cell sap & maintains shape

Cell wall Controls the movement of substances in & out.

Vacuole Proteins are made (synthesised) here.

Cell membrane These is where many reactions take place.

PLENARY
Draw a labelled diagram of a cell with all the cell
organelles you have learnt today.
Quick Test - Cell Organelles

1. What does the cell membrane do?

2. What does the cell wall do?
3. What substance do chloroplasts contain and what does it do?
4. What is the job of the nucleus?
