Reinforcement Calculation:
The spacing of bars in 'Provide Ast' is based on the minimum of the following:
a) Calculated area of steel
b) Maximum distance between bars equal to 3 times the effective depth of slab or
300mm, whichever is smaller, as per clause 26.3.3 b) 1) of IS:456-2000.
c) Minimum reinforcement of 0.12% for HYSD bars or 0.15% for MS bars
of total cross-sectional area as per clause 26.5.2.1 of IS:456-2000.
d) Calculated area of steel to meet deflection requirement, for the
case of bottom steel, as per clauses 23.2.1 of IS:456-2000.

Notes on Restrained Slabs

a) Slabs are considered as divided in each direction into middle strips and edge strips as shown in
Figures at the start of the spreadsheet. The middle strip being three-quarters of the width and
each edge strip one-eighth of the width.
b) Bending moments calculated earlier apply only to the middle strips and no redistribution shall be
made.
c) Bottom reinforcement in middle strip shall extend within 0.25 l of a continuous edge, or
0.15 l of a discontinuous edge.
d) Over the continuous edges, top reinforcement in middle strip shall extend a distance of 0.15 l
from
the support, and at least 50% shall extend a distance 0f 0.3 l.
e) At a discontinuous edge, top steel equal to 50% of bottom steel provided at mid-span, extending
0.1 l into the span will be sufficient.
f) Bottom reinforcement in edge strip shall comply with the minimum codal requirement, i.e. 0.12%

for HYSD bars, 0.15% for MS bars, and the maximum distance between bars shall not be more
than 3 x effective depth of slab or 300 mm whichever is smaller, and the requirements for
torsion reinforcement are to be as given below:
g) Torsion reinforcement shall be provided at any corner where the slab is simply supported on both

edges meeting at that corner. It shall consist of top and bottom reinforcement, each with layers of
bars placed parallel to the sides of the slab and extending from the edges a minimum distance of
one-fifth of the shorter span. The area of reinforcement in each of these four layers shall be three-
quarters of the area required for the maximum mid-span moment in the slab.
h) Torsion reinforcement equal to half that described in g) above shall be provided at a corner
contained by edge over only one of which the slab is continuous.
i) Torsion reinforcement need not be provided at any corner contained by edges over both of which
the slab is continuous.
j) For slab panels where l /l is greater than 2, the slab shall be designed as spanning one way.
y x
k) For restrained slabs with unequal conditions at adjacent panels, please refer to clause 24.4.1 of
IS:456-2000 for adjustment of support and mid-span moments in the panels.

Reinforcement Calculation:
The spacing of bars in 'Provide Ast' is based on the minimum of the following:
a) Calculated area of steel
b) Maximum distance between bars equal to 3 times the effective depth of slab or
300mm, whichever is smaller, as per clause 26.3.3 b) 1) of IS:456-2000.
c) Minimum reinforcement of 0.12% for HYSD bars or 0.15% for MS bars
of total cross-sectional area as per clause 26.5.2.1 of IS:456-2000.
d) Calculated area of steel to meet deflection requirement, for the
case of bottom steel in short span, as per clauses 23.2.1 and 24.1 of IS:456-2000.

NOTES ON SLABS.xls

This Spreadsheet is intended to be used by qualified Civil and Structural Engineers who are
familiar with the provisions of IS:456-2000, and those who will evaluate the significance and
limitations of its contents and take responsibility for its use and application.

DISCLAIMER

No liability is accepted by the author of the Spreadsheets for any direct, indirect, consequential or
incidental loss or damage arising out of the usage of Spreadsheets or any mistakes and negligence
in developing the Spreadsheets. The organisation or person using the Spreadsheets bears all risks
and responsibility for the quality and performance of the Spreadsheets.

Notes for Input:

1. The spreadsheet is as per IS:456-2000, for the design of restrained two-way slabs using
Table 26, for simply supported two-way slabs using Table 27, for continuous one-way slabs
using Table 12, and for simply supported one-way slabs, all subjected to uniformly distributed load.
2. The design satisfies the codal requirements on minimum areas of steel, maximum spacing
of bars, and limiting deflection.
3. Usually, the outer most layer of reinforcement in a slab panel is provided in the direction
of short span. But, it can also be specified in the direction of long span if this panel is
adjacent to a panel whose short span is in the same direction, for ease of reinf't placing.
4. Cover to bars considered is clear to outermost layer of bars.
5. If Design Status = 'Revise', revise either the slab thickness or 'Provide A st' in short span
steel until the Design Status = 'O.K'.
6. For notes on reinforcement in Restrained slabs (Panel types 1 to 9), see at the end of
worksheet '2WaySlabs'.
7. Calculations can be made for 10 (ten) number slabs of all types. For any slab that
does not require calculations, all inputs for that slab are to be left blank by using 'Delete' key.
