PREFACE

The process of an undergraduate program in the Faculty of Medicine Universitas

Padjadjaran will be terminated, and students are required to write thesis. The objective of
minor thesis writing is to train students to deliver and write a research paper. To evaluate
and manage thesis writing, students must preserve their thesis to examiners board.

Thesis quality is not only determined by substance or writing material, but there will also be
from the writing procedures. Therefore, it is necessary using a handbook to ensure the
achievement of quality. Moreover, the benefits of this handbook are to strengthen writing
process and thesis guiding.

Realizing that this book is far from perfect, suggestion and critics will be useful to complete
the lack of this book. However, we hope to the parties that required to write thesis utilize
this handbook.

To all people involved in the writing of this handbook, the Faculty would like to express its
sincere gratitude and appreciation.

GENERAL INFORMATION

1. Definition
The final project report is an original report of a project carried out using scientific approaches
that are appropriate to the research questions/problem statements to generate new facts and or
apply concepts and methods from one or more branches of medical and/or health sciences
relevant to the population health problems, and is presented in a scholarly format.

2. Objectives
The final project report is compulsory for the accomplishment of the Medical Skills Program
V and VI. It represents the culmination of the Bachelor Degree Program (Undergraduate in
Medicine), and an opportunity to integrate and apply the concepts in medical science, research
methodology, public health, bioethics and humanities, and character and professionalism
learned during the program.
Upon completing the final project report, the student would be able to:
1. Students are able to construct and write a scientific work (C5)
2. Students are able to conduct research starting from formulating problems, collecting
data, processing data, analyzing data, and drawing conclusions (P5)
3. Encourage students to develop and implement professional values to convey, use,
apply the knowledge to solve health problems through research activity (A5)
4. Students are able to distinguish information technology applications during research
and publication process (P3)

3. Feasible Designs
Several different types of projects may fulfill the requirement:
a. Descriptive studies:
A qualitative or quantitative study measures magnitude, variability of a need or problem and
to explore associated factors. Descriptive studies are often guided by questions rather than
formal hypotheses, and are often the first step in more directed research.

b. Analytic studies
An analytic study may take the form as either a case control or cohort study, although other
approaches may fit into this category. Analytic studies utilize quantitative methods, and are
often guided by hypotheses. For doing such study, a student is strongly recommended to
join/involve in a collaborative research with his/her supervisor(s).

c. Experiments
A study with randomized or otherwise highly controlled allocation of two or more identifiable
intervention strategies which test a hypothesis regarding causation or treatment
effectiveness/efficacy. Feasibility of conducting an experiment is usually limited within the
time frame and resources available to the student, given that the student must take significant
initiative in the study design and execution. As with the analytic study, in conducting this
study, the student is also strongly suggested that he/she attach him/herself with a particular
research project.
d. Case studies
A detailed review of a unique or important clinical case or public health program that captures
the background, process, outcomes, successes, failures and lessons learned. The case study
may include either qualitative or quantitative data or both. The case study provides an
opportunity to explore a single or small number of clinical case or public health program in
depth.

e. Policy analysis
A synthesis of existing and newly collected data brought together in an organized, structured
and thoughtful manner to answer a policy question or present and evaluate the strengths and
weaknesses of policy options for decision makers. A policy analysis usually employs multiple
sources and types of information (e.g., literature, documents, interviews, and secondary data.

f. Intervention or program evaluation.

A structured study which assesses whether a program, intervention or technique is effective
in achieving its goals (effectiveness or efficacy for interventions). A program evaluation
addresses explicit questions, and the methods and measurement may be complex.

g. Systematic review

h. Creative projects

4. Output

In accordance with the Regulation of the Minister of Research, Technology and Higher
Education Number 50 2018 regarding Amendments to the Regulations of the Minister of
Research, Technology and Higher Education Number 44 2015 concerning National Higher
Education Standards, the output of final project report is a scientific publication in a national
journal with status “Submitted”.

FINAL PROJECT PROPOSAL FORMAT

1. Content
The content of the final project should be arranged as follows:

Preface
The preface consists of :
● Title (and sub-title) page (inner cover)
● ‘Surat Pernyataan Tidak Melakukan Plagiarisme dan/atau Menggunakan Data Fiktif’
● Supervisory Team Approval page
● Abstract page:
○ The abstract renders concisely, research objective, methods in brief, result,
discussion/conclusion, and key words.
○ Abstract is written in one paragraph in a single spaceline.
○ References to literature, citations, tables and figures do not belong in an abstract.
○ The abstract of a minor thesis may not exceed 250 words.
○ When the report is written in Bahasa Indonesia, abstract should be provided in
Indonesian and English, and the English version should be typed in italic.
● Foreword page:
○ Should be written in ‘official style’
● List of contents page
● List of tables page (if any)
● List of pictures page (if any)
● List of attachments page (if any)
○ Lists of page should be written in double space line
○ Should the title consist of more than 1 line, write it in single space

1. Chapter I: Introduction

Chapter I should include:

1.1 Background
The purpose is to describe the background, the importance justification or why the study needs
to be conducted
i)State the problem and, especially, the consequences of the problem-the state-of-affairs before
your investigation
ii)Tell the reader what is known
iii)State a specific “unknown” that is crucial to solve the problem
iv)Tell the reader how we can help to solve the problem by learning more about that specific
unknown

1.2 Problem Identification/Research Question(s)

Identify the problem(s) arose from the background

1.3 Research Objective(s)

State clear research objective(s)
1.4 Research Benefit
Outline the benefit(s) of the study toward: the discipline, health profession, institution
1.4.1 Academic benefit
1.4.2 Practical benefit

2. Chapter II: Literature Review

The literature review usually starts with a short survey of the most significant findings of
previous research (review of existing literature) on the same subject. Any contradictory
research outcomes are discussed. The literature cited should have high relevance with the
focus of the study and derived from update or recent publication. It should be obtained from
scientific/scholar sources and not from popular sites such as popular magazines. Should a
website be used, use those with author(s). Popular websites such as Wikipedia and personal
blogs are not allowed to be used. The literature review may not contain any findings or
conclusions from the research that the report is about.
Be careful in citing any literature, fail to do so will be considered as plagiarism, and
consequences will be applied.
Keep it simple and cover only the correlated subjects.
After reviewing the literature, a conceptual framework of the research should be constructed
in the forms of narration and schematic figure. Hypotheses if appropriate.

3. Chapter III: Methods

Research Methods basically contain standard and scientific approaches, methods, procedures
or ways to collect and analyze data that can answer or explain research problems. It includes
a structured and clear description of:

3.1 Research Design

Research design is categorized into quantitative, qualitative and mixed method.
The design choices in the research category are:

Table 2. Research Design

Quantitative Qualitative *) Mixed Method

- Experimental - Narrative/Descriptive - Concurrent mixed

- Non-Experimental - Phenomelogy method
- Longitudinal - Grounded study - Sequential mixed
- Cohort - Ethnography method
- Case control - Case Studies - Convergent
- Cross sectional - Complex design with
embedded core design

In addition to the design outline above, certain designs can also be included that are specific
according to the methodology in the field of science. Example: in addition to mentioned
mixed methods can be added with action research; implementation research; innovation, etc.
Quantitative design can be mentioned based on the perspective of time (cohort, cross
sectional), statistical analysis used, etc, in accordance with the tradition in quantitative
research in general.

3.2 Population, Sample Size and Sampling Techniques

● Clearly state the material, subject (human), and object (experimental animal/cell
culture).
● It describes the research population that is the target population and the affordable
population; Sample, selection method, minimal sample size (sample size calculation
formula), sampling method (probability and non-probability).
● Samples in qualitative research depend on the research paradigm, approach and
research situation. To produce a theory, theoretical sampling is needed. In research situations
with limited subjects can be determined as purposive sampling.

3.3 Operational Definition and Variable Measurement

● The operational definition is an explanation of the operationalization of all variables
identified in the hypothesis.
● The operational definition describes the characterization observed in order to measure
variables.
● Variable measurement is the determination of magnitude, dimension, or capacity
against a unit of measurement.
● The author gives the definition and explains the ways or steps in measuring variables,
including indicators of the measuring instruments used.
● The determination of measurement indicators must refer to literature review that has
been described previously and can use the instrument itself if the measurement has never
been conducted before.
● For better explanation, it is better to make it in the form of table

3.4 Research Instruments

● Disclosing instruments that have been tested for validity and reliability for data
collection.
● Qualitative research data collection instruments can be in the form of a grid of
interview questions, observations, field notes, documentation or other instruments taking
into account their relevance to the research focus.
● In this section it should be noted that the data collection instruments mentioned are
only those tools that are used for data collection.
● If you don't have an instrument yet, then do qualitative research first, then do an
instrument trial.
● In qualitative research, researchers are also research instruments. It is necessary to
include the use of aids such as interview guidelines, audio video etc.

3.5 Research Location and Time

● Explain the location of the facility to carry out the research process
● Make a table about the period of research implementation

3.6 Data Collection Techniques

● Explain in detail the procedures / how the research works, for example protocols,
SOPs
● How data is collected: describe how data is retrieved for both primary and secondary
data.
● The data collection technique is conveyed in detail, so that everyone can follow it,
almost without having to get an explanation first.
● Some data collection techniques in qualitative research such as in-depth interviews,
Focus Group Discussions, document studies explained mechanisms, places, procedures,
subjects, tools used. Triangulation activities and trustworthiness techniques needed to be
written down.

3.7 Data Analysis

Quantitative Research Qualitative Research Mixed Method

Descriptive statistics Describes the data analysis Describe the procedures

provide simple summaries procedures used such as and techniques of
about the sample and the transcription and so on. Then combining quantitative
measures explained the next analysis and qualitative to be
options such as: Story telling, performed
Analytic statistics provide Content analysis, theme
test hypothesis about development, theorization,
exposure-outcome condensed description,
relationships Trustworthiness (needs to
include how to maintain
trustworthiness).

3.8 Research Ethics

● Explain ethical principles related to research conducted, whether it meets the ethical
aspects of experimental animals or humans
● Number of ethical approval/exemption letters from the Research Ethics Committee
that gives approval.

3.9 Dummy Table

Contains the table that is the target in the presentation of the results of the planned research
(specifically the manuscript of the Research Proposal).

References
● Contains all references (textbooks, journals, internet sources) used in the final project
proposal.
● It is mandatory to manage the references and citation using reference manager
applications such as Endnote/Mendeley/Zotero, etc.
● References are written in Vancouver style formats.
REFFERENCE LAYOUT

References are written in the modified Vancouver Style formats. It is obligatory to use
reference manager software.
The general principles in the modified Vancouver style format are:
1. References should be numbered consecutively in the order in which they are first
mentioned in the text.
2. Identify references in text, tables, and legends by Arabic numbers in superscripted
figures, after a fullstop sign.
Example: ………..degeneration.1,2,3
3. References cited only in tables or figure legends should be numbered in accordance
with the sequence established by the first identification in the text of the particular table or
figure.
4. The name of author(s) should appear first in the list, and appear in original sequence
of the source itself.
5. If one reference consists of two lines or more, keep it left aligned with the first capital
in the first line.
Look at the examples on the following page.
6. The formats of references are classified according to the source. Further explanation
on how to write them is provided.
7. Using reference manager program such as EndNote will help in managing the
reference and its lay-out in the reference list, but be careful during data entry of the
bibliography, choose the appropiate type of reference to get a standard sequence of reference
list.
