A Descriptive Essay usually looks like this:

This essay discusses the 2022 War in Ukraine. In February 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine. Two days later troops began moving towards Kiev from every
direction. During the various battles, Russia used a variety of heavy weapons against civilian areas. The Ukrainians fought back and tried to resist the
occupation. The EU imposed sanctions on Russia but it did not prevent them from pursing their plan to take over the whole of Ukraine.

Versus a more analytical essay grounded in theory and evidence

This essay argues that realism continues to provide the strongest explanation for conflict in the 21st century. In examining the 2022 War in Ukraine, I will
demonstrate how liberal institutions including the EU and the UN failed to prevent conflict. In particular, threats of prosecution by the ICC entirely failed to
prevent genocide. Demonstrating the importance of Power measured in military terms, I will show that Ukrainian victory came only when NATO provided
weapons necessary for an insurgency campaign similar to the mujahedeen in Afghanistan in the 1980s.

A example of a descriptive paragraph

In February 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine. Two days later troops began moving towards Kiev from every direction. During the war, Russia used a
variety of heavy weapons against civilian areas. President Putin has ignored the international community.

Versus a paragraph that engages with relevant sources

In February 2022, Russia violated Article 2, Section 4 of the United Nations Charter when they invaded the sovereign territory of Ukraine. Despite
efforts by the United States and the European Union to halt this illegal war, within two days, Russian forces had advanced to within 30 miles of the
capital city. Although not a signatory to the UN treaty on cluster munitions, Smith (2022) has argued that Russia may still be guilty of war crimes as
a consequence of indiscriminate attacks on civilian areas. War in Ukraine has again demonstrated that Realism remains an important theory of
International Relations. Power remains the most significant currency.
