Good Day!

We, the 3rd year Nursing Student from the College of Nursing at the Our Lady of Fatima
University are requesting permission from your good office to allow us to conduct a community
service entitled "Be Aware, Hand Wash with Care: Health and Sanitation project” at
Malinta Elementary School, the participants in this project are the children ages 5-10 years old.
In order to complete our activity in the National Service Training Program (NSTP). For the
benefit of children's health and well being, this programme encourages good hand hygiene
habits. By fostering a culture of good hand hygiene, the project hopes to enhance health
outcomes and lessen the spread of disease.

For conducting this project, we need your support to permit us to bring this thought into
reality. You are requested to give your permission and assistance for such a project. Our team
informs you timely about the developments of the project. We are hoping for a positive response
for our request. Thank you and may God bless you!

I. INTRODUCTION
Using a hand sanitizer or soap and water to clean our hands might appear like a small
step, but it makes a great significant difference in our health. The simple act of cleaning our
hands can prevent the spread of germs that can cause us several diseases. About one in three
young children who get sick with diarrhea and one in five young children who get sick with
respiratory infections such as pneumonia could improve their health just by washing their hands
regularly, and correctly, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggests. A key
part of promoting good health and wellbeing is teaching children the importance of hand hygiene
and how and when to wash their hands.
The Global Hygiene Council (GHC) reports that 42% of 5-10-year-old children do not
always use soap when they wash their hands at school. During COVID-19, primary school
children were surveyed across seven countries regarding their hygiene habits and awareness. The
result shows that there were higher levels of soap usage at home than at school in all countries
studied. In addition, children and people with weakened immune systems are more susceptible to
gastrointestinal and respiratory infections that can cause serious complications. Contact with
contaminated hands can cause the transmission of a number of infectious diseases. Infections of
the gastrointestinal tract, such as salmonellosis, and those of the respiratory system, such as
influenza, colds, and Coronavirus (COVID-19), are among them. For this reason, it is important
to encourage children to wash their hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water or to use an
alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not readily
available.
The majority of children may know that they should be washing their hands, however,
many are not actually putting it into practice, so there is a clear gap in educating them about the
importance of handwashing. The aim of Be aware, hand wash with care: A Health and
Sanitation Project is to educate, supervise and assist selected 20-30 children aging from 5-10
years old with handwashing as needed until they can fully understand the importance of proper
hand hygiene at an early age and develop it into a lifelong habit. Furthermore, the project will
also provide a free soap, hand sanitizer, and a washcloth to increase their access to hand hygiene
supplies as well as infographics that will serve as their visual cues regarding proper hand
washing.

The community goal of the project is to create a hygienic and healthy environment for
children by ensuring the widespread adoption of proper handwashing practices. The project aims
to raise awareness about hand hygiene among children, parents, caregivers, and the broader
community through awareness campaigns, educational activities, and stakeholder collaboration.
By promoting behavior change, the project strives to encourage consistent and effective
handwashing practices among children, integrating them into their daily routines. The project
also seeks to improve sanitation facilities, such as handwashing stations, and advocate for access
to clean water sources. By collaborating with stakeholders, including schools and healthcare
providers, the project aims to create a supportive network that facilitates the implementation and
sustainability of the handwashing program. Monitoring and evaluation of the project's impact
allows for continuous improvement and evidence-based decision-making to maximize its
positive effects on children's health and hygiene practices.
IV. RESOURCES
The nursing students from Our Lady of Fatima University needed support to accomplish
the proposed project, which is the “Be aware, hand wash with care : A Health and Sanitation
Project”. Its main objective is to educate 20 to 30 children, ages 5-10 years old from Malinta,
Valenzuela, of the importance of handwashing to their health and to prevent them from getting a
disease.

1. Where to go for Financial Support?

A small hygiene kit is to be provided to the children, which will contain hygiene products,
such as soaps, alcohols, and washcloths. Informational materials such as brochures and tarpaulin
will be provided to not just keep the children mindful of the lessons taught, but also further
improve the community’s hygienic system even outside the scope of the foundation.
A total estimated price of 2,000-3,000 pesos will be procured to support the project. The
following are the potential sources of support for the project:

● Personal Funds – every student nurse that is part of this project is obliged to contribute
to the required amount for this project.
● Local Government Unit (LGU) – along with the permission to execute the action plan
itself, funding for the materials will also be requested from Barangay Malinta’s Local
Government. By seeking their assistance and advice, the students will be able to
successfully implement the sanitary project to improve and maintain the health of the
children. The action team will also meet with the Barangay Malinta’s Community Health
Service before the implementation phase of the project and have the opportunity to gain
knowledge on how to further enhance the experience of our target beneficiaries.
● Crowdfunding – A promotional website that contains our main objectives will also be
created, to gain more funds and possibly buy other supplementary items that will be
included in the small hygiene kit. Through social media and other communication
platforms, it may involve a larger audience and motivate people to support the cause of
the project. This can draw in supporters who share the same goals and are eager to offer
financial support by outlining our vision and the potential effects of our project.

2. Where to get advice and educational materials?

The barangay chairman, Jeffrey De Leon Abiera, along with the barangay health workers
and other barangay officials can provide valuable advice and guidance to the nursing students
about the community of Malinta. Moreover, reaching out to the Barangay Malinta’s Health
Worker and their Sangguniang Kabataan and absorbing the lessons from their experiences will
give us knowledge on enhancing our teaching methods, which will consequently make it easier
for the children to understand our hygiene lessons.
For our educational materials, such as posters and brochures. several stores and
establishments will be evaluated. This will ensure that we will procure the maximum number of
materials for our action plan with our obtained funds while maintaining the quality of our target
resources.

3. Where to get donated products and services?

The health products that are needed will be mainly obtained from the Barangay Health
Workers, due to having the most amount of health supplies among our contacts. The action team
will also collaborate with them in partaking in the demonstration of the proper hygiene process.
Having a pleasant location is essential in keeping an engaging learning environment. Thus,
venue reservations will be requesting from the Barangay Officials with an initial set of places to
hold the implementation process into.
Assistance from the Barangay Officials and Sangguniang Kabataan will be sought after in
terms of the program flow. This is due to the importance of keeping orderliness in the teaching
process and the distribution of the products to the children in preventing potential conflicts in the
project.
The student nurses will be also working with the residents, such as the parents, to gain their
support and cooperation for the betterment of the entire community.
