IWB Activity Plans

These activities can be used with any of the High Flyers Graphic Readers. Select
the story, frames or Skills Section you want to use. Make sure to prepare the IWB
before class by pre-loading any necessary frames, text, pages or Skill Section.
Preparation for each activity should take 5-10 minutes.

Skills Section
These activities are based on the Skills Section at the back of each book. Import the
activities from the Skills Section Gallery and follow the activity directions.

Activity 1: Fill in the Blank


1. Pre-load a fill in the blank activity from the Skills Folder.
2. Ask a student to read the first question.
3. Encourage the students to look in their books to find the answer.
4. Have one student write the answer in the blanks provided on the IWB slide.
Note: Remind students to check the directions to see which color pen they should use.

Activity 2: Mark an Item


1. Pre-load a marking activity from the Skills Folder.
2. Have students read and explain the directions of the selected activity.
3. Arrange learners in groups
4. Have each group complete part of the activity.

Activity 3: Sorting
1. Pre-load a sorting activity from the Skills Folder.
2. Go over the categories with the students.
3. Have students take turns moving the items into the proper categories.
Alternative: Students may draw a line from the item to the category or sentence if the activity is
imported as a single image.

Activity 4: Rewriting
1. Pre-load a rewriting activity from the Skills Folder.
2. Have students form small groups of 3-4.
3. Assign each group a share of the sentences that should be rewritten.
4. Have each group transfer their answers to the IWB.
5. Encourage all of the students to check the accuracy of the new sentences.
Note: These are frequently reinforcement for True/False activities, and should be used as
companion activities.
Activity 5: Unscramble
1. Pre-load an unscramble activity from the Skills Folder.
2. Ensure that students have carefully read the instructions. Sometimes they will be answering a
question, sometimes they will be completing the story or sequence.
3. Encourage students to produce their own answer first, then to use the available words to make
an answer.
4. Have students take turns putting the words in order and encourage them to check each other’s
work.

Activity 6: Drag and Drop


1. Pre-load a drag and drop activity from the Skills Folder.
Note: Drag and Drop activities include activities such as “Who is it?”, “Learn New Words”, and
more.
2. Make sure students have carefully read directions. Some activities look similar but have
different purposes.
3. Encourage students to take turns dragging the items to the correct places.
4. Students can also work in pairs, where one student gets to complete the IWB activity, but only
with instruction from their partner or group.
IWB Activity Plans
These activities can be used with any of the High Flyers Graphic Readers. Select
the story, frames or Skills Section you want to use. Make sure to prepare the IWB
before class by pre-loading any necessary frames, text, pages or Skill Section.

Frame by Frame
These activities are designed to use specific groups of frames or dialogue from the
Graphic Readers. Import the images from the Images and Text Gallery.

Activity 1: Error Detectives


1. Pre-load the required frame and set as a background image.
2. Based on the original text, create a new text with an error in it.
3. Ask the students to identify the error and correct it.
4. For students who have difficulties, encourage them to look in their book.
Note: Have sufficient frames prepared for the group.

Activity 2: Personalized Story


1. Pre-load the required frame onto a blank screen.
2. Ask students CCQs about what they can see.
3. Have students form small groups to write text for the image.
4. Have students write or type their text onto the IWB and read it out loud.

Activity 3: Making Predictions


1. Pre-load the required frames onto a blank page.
2. Put the main frame on the left side of the screen and the options on the right side of the screen.
Note: One of the options must be the next image in the sequence of the book.
3. Ask students to say what is going on in the main frame.
4. Ask students to predict which of the frames is next in the story.
5. Ask students to rationalize their choice.
6. Show students the correct answer.
Note: For those students that need more support, add the text from the pages and underline
keywords that might help students make a prediction.
Activity 4: Matching
1. Pre-load the required frame and dialogues on to a blank page.
2. Put the image frame on the left side of the screen.
3. Put up to four possible dialogues on the right side of the screen.
4. Ask learners to choose the dialogue they think is correct and drag it to its place.
Note: For lower proficiencies choose frames with a short dialog or choose only one
part of the dialog to use.

Activity 5: Jigsaw Puzzles


1. Pre-load several images of the required frame.
2. Crop the images to form a jigsaw puzzle.
3. Invite students to put the pieces of the puzzle together.
4. Ask students CCQs about the puzzles.

Activity 6: Find Me
1. Pre-load two copies of the required frame on to a blank screen.
2. Fix the frames side by side.
3. Have students form two teams.
4. Team one should “spy” five to eight objects.
5. As each object is called out, team two must circle it in the frame.
6. Once all items have been found, load a new frame and have teams switch roles.
Note: Choose a busy slide to maximize the possible questions.
IWB Activity Plans
These activities can be used with any of the High Flyers Graphic Readers. Select

The Big Picture


These activities are designed to use full pages from the Graphic Readers. Import the
images from the Book Pages Gallery.

Activity 1: Ordering Frames


1. Pre-load all the frames that make up a full page from the Images Folder.
2. Spread them around the board, ensuring that they’re not in order.
3. Have students try to piece the page back together.
4. For higher levels, use the images from three or four sequential pages to make the exercise
more challenging.
5. Encourage students to describe the page(s) and story once it’s in the right order.

Activity 2: Be an Illustrator!
1. Pre-load most of the frames that make up a full page from the Images Folder.
2. Put the images in the same place they appear on the page, leaving space for the images that
weren’t loaded.
3. Have students explain what is happening on the page, as well as what might be happening in
the missing frames.
4. Have students take turns drawing in the missing frames.
5. Use the whole page to check the accuracy of the drawings.

Activity 3: Missing Words


1. Pre-load a full page from the reader.
2. Cover a selection of words on the page with filled shapes, (use the IWB software to draw these
over the words.)
3. Make sure the words share a theme, i.e. number of syllables, all adjectives, all colors, etc.
4. Ask students to identify the types of missing words.
5. Ask students to predict what words might fill in the empty spaces.
6. Reveal the answers to check their work.
Activity 4: Be a Writer!
1. Pre-load one section of the book, preferably three to five pages.
2. Remove or hide the text from each page, but leave space so that it is clear where the text be-
longs.
3. Put students into groups.
4. Allot one section to each group and have them rewrite the story based only on what they see.
5. Have the students transfer their text to the IWB or read their part out loud.
6. See how closely the student stories matched the real story.

Activity 5: In the Spotlight


1. Pre-load several of the full pages from the reader.
2. Place each page on a new slide in the IWB software.
3. Compile a list of things per page for students to look for or identify.
4. Turn on the spotlight tool before students can look carefully at the pages.
5. Have students take turns controlling the spotlight tool to find things on the list. Encourage
other students to help them if they see one of the items.

Activity 6: Odd One Out


1. Pre-load four to six pages on the IWB. One page should be from a different story than the oth-
ers.
2. Ask the students to look carefully and decide which page is not from their story.
3. Encourage students to explain why they think the page doesn’t match.
4. Have students write a short story using all of the pictures, including the odd one out.
