TITLE:
HYPOTHESIS:
The leavening agent baking powder reacts and produces
more carbon dioxide than baking soda so it would
therefore give cookies a better and fluffier texture
AIM: To determine which leavening agent between
baking power and baking soda produces more carbon
dioxide
APPARATUS MATERIALS
Gas syringe Baking powder
Retort stand Baking soda
Conical flask Hydrochloric acid
Rubber stopper
Rubber tubing
Clip
Thistle funnel
METHOD:
. 2 tablespoons of baking powder was added to a conical
flask
. The conical flask was then covered with a rubber
stopper with two holes in it
. After a gas syringe was clamped to a retort stand
. Rubber tubing was connected to the gas syringe on one
side and other was connected to one of the holes in the
rubber stopper covering the conical flask
. In the other hole a thistle funnel was placed in it
. 5 ml of hydrochloric acid was then poured through the
thistle funnel
. Mixture was then shaken
. Observations were recorded
. The procedure was repeated using baking soda

VARIABLES:
. Controlled variable: Setup of lab equipment
. Manipulated variable: Baking powder was replaced with
Baking soda
. Responding variable: Amount of gas produced by each
manipulated variable (baking powder and baking soda)
