Unit 2 L3: Chemical Changes

a- Experiment 1:
Materials Needed:
- Vinegar - Baking Soda - Balloon
- Beaker - Flask - Funnel
Procedure:
• Add vinegar in a flask.
• Add 1 teaspoon of baking soda in a balloon (use the funnel to help you add the
baking soda easily).
• Cover the top of the flask with a balloon and lift the balloon up.
Observation: Record the change taking place in the beaker.
The balloon inflated after mixing baking soda and vinegar.

Specify (indicate then justify) the type of change observed in the beaker.

It is a chemical change since a new substance is produced (release of gas).

b- Experiment 2:
Materials Needed:
- Sulfuric acid Sugar
Procedure:

Ste p 1: Ad d fe w a m o u nt o f Ste p 2: C a re fu lly a d d a sm a ll

b e a ke r c o nta in in g su g a r

- Record your obervation:

The sugar turned black and the temperature increased.
1
- Specify (indicate then justify) the type of change observed in the beaker.
It is a chemical change since a new substance is produced (change in color
and release of heat).

c- Experiment 3:
Materials Needed:
- Barium hydroxide Ammonium chloride
Procedure:
- Put few quantiy of Barium hydroxide and Ammonium
chloride in a beaker/ flask.
- Mix well using a stirring rod.
- Record your obervation:
The flask became cold (the temperature decreased)
- Specify (indicate then justify) the type of change observed in the beaker.
It is a chemical change since a new substance is produced (absorption of
heat).
d- Experiment 4 :
Materials Needed:
- Potassium iodide solution
- Lead nitrate solution
Procedure:
- Slowly using a dropper add few amount of Potassium iodide solution into a test tube
containing Lead nitrate solution.
- Record your obervation:
The colored changed into yellow and a precipitate is formed.
- Specify (indicate then justify) the type of change observed in the test tube.
It is a chemical change since a new substance is produced (change in color
and formation of precipitate).
e- Experiment 5 :
Materials Needed:
- Magnesium ribbon
- Bunsen burner

Procedure:

2
- Carefully approach the magnesium ribbon using a metallic tong next to a bunsen burner.
- Record your obervation:
A light is produced after burning the magnesium ribbon.
- Specify (indicate then justify) the type of change observed after burning the magnesium
ribbon.
It is a chemical change since a new substance is produced (production of
light).

f- Based on the experiments above, list the evidence of a chemical change:

• Release of gas
• Release/ Absorption of heat
• Change in color
• Formation of precipitate
• Emission of light

Enjoy your work little chemists!
