11 Biology - Review

Diversity of Living Things

Use your notes and the following questions to create a summary sheet of important information
for the unit. The sheet must meet the criteria outlined below and will be collected on the day of
your assessment. Students enrolled in the College level course may use their sheet during
assessments.

1. The sheet can be no larger than 8½” by 11".


2. You may use both sides of the sheet.
3. The information must be hand-written. It can not be typed and can not include
scanned, cut and pasted or photocopied material.
4. The information must be your own. Copied information other than information from
your notes or textbook is considered plagiarism.
5. The information must be clearly legible!

The following questions are meant to serve as an overview of the material you need to study for
the assessment.

G List and provide the general characteristics, including examples, of the 6 kingdoms.
G Distinguish between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells
G Arrange the following in correct order: genus, phylum, order, family, species, class,
kingdom.
G Be able to use phylogenetic trees to determine the ancestry of a particular organism.
G Be able to use dichotomous keys to identify a specific organism.
G Be able to describe the 3 ways in which bacteria are classified.
G Distinguish between a facultative aerobe, obligate aerobe and obligate anaerobe.
G How do bacteria reproduce?
G What is bacterial resistance and how do scientists believe it develops?
G Why are viruses not considered to be living things?
G What is the difference between a naked and enveloped virus?
G Explain the lytic and lysogenic cycle of viral reproduction.
G Distinguish between viruses, viroids and prions.
G Explain the process of alternation of generations and how it differs from human
reproduction.
G Be able to describe characteristics of the various phyla of protists.
G What two functions have the structure of fungi been adapted to?
G What two methods of reproduction do fungi use?
G Describe the importance of fungi in ecosystems
G List and describe the key features of the 4 groups of plants
G List the 5 differences between monocots and eudicots.
G What 4 features do all animals share?
G Describe the 5 ways in which animals are classified.
