Gender and Society Assignment

1. Differentiate gender equality from Gender equity. Provide

at least 2 examples,
Gender equality is a concept that emphasizes that all men and women are equal thus
have the freedom to improve personal skills and abilities. It recognized that as men and
women are equal thus both should receive equal treatment and have the rights to
express themselves freely without stereotypes.

An example of gender equality in the workplace is when men and women are treated
equally and receive equal pay for the same work done regardless of gender. The equal
opportunity provided to all league athletes is an example of gender equity in sports. In
the WNBA and NBA, this means that pay rates and the total number of games played
are evaluated fairly, as opposed to given that males could have an advantage. Gender
equity is realized when household chores are equally assigned to the children. This
would teach them the skills that they need to become more mature and prepare them
in taking care of their future homes.

2. What is gender main streaming? What are its principles?
It is the strategy to fulfil agreements to gender equality and a key to avoiding gender
inequality. Gender mainstreaming is a process that evaluates all laws, policies,
programs, and planned actions that have an impact on both men and women. Gender
mainstreaming ensures the welfare of both men and women and stresses that
sustainable development would be impossible if discrimination is present. It seeks to
change discrimination in social structures, laws, cultural practices, and norms of society
ensuring gender equality and equity.

Gender mainstreaming has been identified to have 3 key principles by the Commonwealth
Secretariat. The first principle is empowerment, which refers to exercising control over choices
and scenarios which have an impact on one's life. The second is the accountability principle,
which emphasized that change is impossible without the motivation of the organizations and
society to partake in change. Last but not least is the integration of effort, which means that
evaluation and cooperation are needed to make sure that gender mainstreaming functions as a
coherent strategy intended to change the structures that produce and establish gender
inequality.
3. Explain how gender equality is achieved via gender equity?
4. Based on the definition of gender equity, it is the fairness in terms of benefits, policies,
and treatment that everyone receives regardless of gender. From this, gender equity
would be a stepping stone in achieving gender equality, because gender equity
recognizes diversity in terms of gender explaining that everyone should receive equal
treatment that corresponds to their needs. Determining the corresponding needs of
individuals would help us satisfy everyone thus helping us give the equal treatment they
are looking for and therefore achieving gender equality.
