The process of perfection depends both on the incoming sensory stimulation as well as the
knowledge the perceiver brings to the situation.

1. Discuss how our expectancies or prior knowledge can lead us to view our world
accurately at times yet inaccurately at other time.

Perception is the process of recognizing, organizing and interpreting information from

senses. Perception that are constructed using information based on expectations and
prior knowledge are under the approach of top – down processing. Energy contains
information about the world are usually complete, full of noise and distorted that make
us to view the world accurate at times yet inaccurately at other time.

2. What novel example from the real world can you generate to support these idea?

For example, student A may perceive strawberry as a fruit that is soft, sweet, juicy and
have a bright red colour that can be eat alone or process it into ice cream or jam
meanwhile student B perceive strawberry as a fruit that have variety of colour, contain
vitamin C and low in calories which are good for health.

3. Discuss how prior knowledge or expectancies affect our interaction with

ambiguous stimuli. What novel examples can your students generate to show
this?

Our prior knowledge or expectancies does affect our interaction with ambiguous stimuli
due to our perception. It is because the stimuli might be seen before and we can
identify them. For example, when we saw a blurry picture something that is tall, we
may guess them as a tree, lamp post or a building.

4. Also consider how different people (thus, assuming different available

knowledge/ experience) might interpret the same stimulus differently.

Different person interprets the same stimulus differently because we have different
experience and knowledge. The perception when you look something for the first time
will be different with someone who already know about it.
