Getting Started with Number of the Day
Why use Number of the Day

● It’s a productive routine and a great way to kick-off the day/class.

● Students explore multiple representations including spatial and numerical models.
● It’s accessible to students at various points of their numeracy development.
● Student discussions provide insights into each student’s understanding.

How It Works

● Use the printable assets to configure your NOTD display on a bulletin board or any
location with high visibility.
● Decide on a few routine models to be part of your display but leave room for
models and ideas from students.
● Introduce the NOTD routine through full-group discussions. Eventually, you may wish
to have students follow along with a NOTD record sheet which offer interesting
formative assessment opportunities.
● Start each NOTD discussion with visual models including number lines, five or ten
frames, base ten blocks, dot patterns, fingers, drawn objects, numerals, tally marks,
and words.
● Eventually, expand the discussions to include operations and number patterns like
finding one more/less than the NOTD, and making the NOTD using a single digit
(i.e., 36 is 44 - 4 - 4)
