ABSTRACT

In today’s world, sanitation and waste management is a prudent

issue which is raising serious issues throughout the country. Since
long, we have aimed at a clean and green India, but our efforts
towards achieving it have been minimal. This lead us into thinking,
that we must come up with a solution to combat the problem of
improper waste management by the use of technologies we know
about. This way, our aim was to device a project aimed at
being practically applied and implemented to solve the problems
aforementioned. Thus, the idea of Smart Waste Management
combines the need for today. We have divided the project into three
parts. The first phase is the concept of Auto-Locking Dustbins. This
prevents the overflowing of dustbins which leads to reduction in
scattering of waste. The second phase consists of a GPS Module
based Notification System which alerts the Garbage Truck Driver
once the bins are full so that the collection can be ensured. In the
second phase itself, we are aiming to take the idea of notification
system further and design an optimal LED system that can indicate
whether or not the dustbin is full or not. The idea is to have 3 stages
of lighting: Green for dustbin <50% full, Yellow for dustbin<75% full
and Red for Dustbin >75% full. The third and final phase includes the
process of segregration of waste into mainly dry and wet waste. With
this project, we hope to impact the population at various levels who
are suffering due to the lack of sanitation and waste disposal
facilites. Improper waste management is the backbone of diseases,
and moreover, after the pandemic that we’re going through,
sanitation will be of utmost importance to the entire world. Thus,
by successfully implementing these ideas our aim is to achieve
cleanliness and sanitation which leads to a healthy locality.

INTRODUCTION

WHAT IS DESIGN THINKING?

Design thinking is a methodology used by designers to solve complex
problems and find desirable solution for client. Design thinking
draws upon logic, imagination, intuition and systemic reasoning to
explore possibilities of what could be and to create desired outcomes
that benefit the end user (the customer).
The goal of design thinking is “matching people’s needs with what is
technologically feasible and visible as a strategy”.
Design thinking is a creative process that helps design meaningful
solutions in classroom, at college and in community. It is generally
defined as an analytic and creative process that engages, create and
prototype models, gather feedback and redesign
IT’S IMPORTANCE AND SOCIAL RELEVANCE:
• It’s a methodology to enable innovation.
• It’s a collaborative effort that brings people together with a wide
range of disciplines.
• Focused on human goals.
• Based on observation and testing.
• Not a replacement for business analytics.
• Has the ability to solve “wicked” problems
• Reduces risk.
• Doesn’t require a traditional design background (although it helps)

LEARNING TOOLS AND IT’S IMPORTANCE

Design engineering has helped us helped us enhancing our
capabilities. This whole experience has motivated us to work hard
and develop a product that would be useful to society and have a
very good impact on society.
TEAM BUILDING EXERCISES AND LOG BOOK RECORDS
Every person way of thinking is different. Thus, having different
people together brings a variety of ideas. This helps in covering
all perspectives while designing solution. Whatever rough work we
do stays in the log book as a record. Sometimes it happens that we
have an idea and then after some time we forget it. Log book helps in
keeping track of such things.

Explanation Of All Canvas

1) Mind Map:
▪ Mind map sheet covers all logic, observation, idea,
thoughts and visualization.
▪ It shows the different branches of your thoughts
that are connected with your domain( project main
title). The domain can also the area where your
project will place.

2) AEIOU Canvas:
▪ Activities
▪ Environment
▪ Interaction
▪ Object
▪ Users

6

3) Empathy Canvas:
▪ The word empathy means that you put to
emotionally connect with your user or with a person
when you’re going to try and tell your foot so that is
the word that is empathy.
▪ Empathy Mapping is the first step when you go into
study design engineering and it is the first chart for
the first canvas that you will be making when you
start with your design engineering project course.
▪ Empathy Canvas is divided into various sections the
section which you are seeing over your is a user
section then the stakeholder’s, activities,
storyboarding, and then you have a happy sad story.
▪ What is this exactly how is it entire empathy
mapping divided first thing that you come the
whatever when you have taken your project.

4) Ideation Canvas:
➢ People in ideation Canvas
▪ Now who is going to be using your DE project the
various type of people work would be connected to
your design project will come under the first panel of
people and write up as many names accordingly to
your project.
▪ If you are taking transportation who is travelling is it
students is it families lawyers or doctors so let them
go in your first column be creative language is not the
barrier or if you want to write in Gujarati Hindi table is
Marathi whatever you’re comfortable with just go
ahead and write it down in this particular column
draw make it interesting.
➢ Activities Ideation Canvas
▪ It is your room canvas now go on to the second part
of the catalyst that is this particular section is called
as activities.
▪ Now in activities trying to write down activities
which are a process like it would be net sophie it
could be buying online tickets it could be dealing with
your conductors anyone so all these little.
➢ Situation, Context and Locations
▪ A journey can be night journey it can be nature if I
am travelling by bus.It could be not really Richard it
could be in a desert region it would be enough force
to the region all those various locations that come to
your mind.

Team No.:369306 GECM

▪ When you think of activities you need to jot them

down over you once you’re done through with this
portion of the chart you.
➢ Props/Tools/Objects/Equipments
▪ Now move with a final Portion of the ideation
canvas that is props and possible solutions when you
write these various things be it a night journey a
journey whatever your situation is you will realize
that there are certain things that you will encounter
or it’s complex problems to you and you have come
and when you gain some you come to a solution write
down the solution and free even if it’s not our
heuristic solution just go ahead and write it down.

5) Product Development Canvas:

▪ His is the last canvas of design engineering first
module what are you doing the product development
canvas is you the first pattern you’re going to fill is a
purpose path.
▪ What are the various features that you would like
your product to have its open imagination and write
as many features as you want once you’ve done that
what are these various features indicating the words
that will indicate an ad or towards something called
as a total function once you reach here it has to be
just a precise for one or two words once you
determine what the functions of your product you go
down to what is you move up brother.
What is Product Experience?
▪ Your product experience will tell you the various
things that your consumer is going to feel after you’ve
done that you now can assure yourself as to UM.
Customer Revalidation
▪ We can come down to customer revalidation you go
to the customer selling your product get feedback
from him as to water is complain about what are the
things that he enjoys about your product and jot
them down in this particular section once you’ve
done that and you are sure of what your 30 or 40 or
product is you then go down he has given you
complaints.

6) Prototype:
11
Team No.:369306 GECM

• Prototype is a model or a canvas that gives a basic

idea of your model interface.
• This contains a basic flow diagram of your project
and a series of steps that you would follow to design
the final project.
• The prototype of a project should explain your
project structure to the viewer in Brief.

7) LNM Canvas:

Learning Needs Matrix will help students to identify

the learning requirements at an early stage along with
prioritization of specific learning along with defined
time duration/ time allocation for each learning
priority.
Identification will be focused on listing out both (i) the
learning, which is included in some subject of the
formal syllabus of your branch and (ii) the learning,
which is required for solving the Design problem and
which may not be included in the formal syllabus of
the other subjects. All such learning, required for
developing the product, should be considered to be
required to be studied for the group of students, who
are working on the product. It may include learning of
specific skills.

Conclusion
So till now as we have seen that we have prepared a basic
outline for our project. Now next we would go one step
further in our project.
Also we have seen the basic idea of “Smart Waste
Management”.
And in this report we have seen the Mind Mapping Canvas,
AEIOU Canvas, Empathy Canvas, Ideation Canvas, Product
Development Canvas, Prototype and Monthly Assessment
Card.
