Abstract.
This research article aimed to identify students' perceptions of using the Canva
application in a creative writing course and how Canva might help students
develop their creative writing. Canva allows students to create engaging creative
writing projects. Therefore, the Canva application is very appropriate during the
current pandemic as Canva can facilitate online student projects from the features
provided. It is hoped that by utilizing Canva, students would learn to write more
simply through distance learning. The research design of this research is
descriptive quantitative to collect and analyze the data. The data for this study took
from students of the ELESP of Lambung Mangkurat University who have taken
the Creative Writing course and used Canva in class. The sample for this research
is 46 students. The data were obtained through the use of a questionnaire and an
interview. The researcher distributed the participants a questionnaire to answer the
five-point Likert scale, which contains the indicators consisting of 24 questions.
Then, the researcher conducted the interviews with the sample representative of
approximately 3 ELESP students. Students had a positive perception of Canva in
Creative Writing classes, according to the findings of this study. The Canva
application makes it easy for students to express their feelings through available
features and designs for creative writing. Students feel more creative, innovative,
and motivated to produce professional creative writing products. In addition,
students also feel more confident in publishing their performances in writing.
Students have positive perceptions, but there are also disadvantages to utilizing
Canva. Students need extra time to create programs using Canva. Canva users need
a stable internet network for efficient use because the unstable network may make
it difficult to export finished products.

INTRODUCTION
Technology in ELT that provides fast and easy internet network access to
information and social activities has influenced life in the educational field. Technology
in ELT has advanced in the academic field, not simply as a communication tool, but
students can learn how to utilize computers and other technological devices. Especially

in this era of the Covid-19 pandemic, the government has changed the learning process
from offline to online.
In addition, online learning emphasizes the use of technology to facilitate learning.
The changes in the learning process due to the Covid-19 pandemic have had a positive
impact on technological advances in education. This progress can be seen in using various
kinds of online-based student learning support applications.
One of the learning processes that are the main target of the researcher is learning
English. Students utilize various English language skills such as listening, speaking,
reading, and writing for their proficiency and communication (Grabe & Stoller, 2013).
Writing is one of the four most challenging language skills to acquire since it involves
many rules. Writing is one of the skills that includes the authors' thoughts that have a
standard structure in which the author must pay attention to the mechanism, grammar
rules, content, and organization of the writing topic. Writing is defined as the clear, fluent,
and efficient communication of ideas and the successful transfer of emotions, thoughts,
wishes, and dreams via the use of symbols by grammatical rules.
In producing a writing project in the technology era, students cannot just rely on
a common framework. Students must have innovative concepts to create attractive
writing. Thus, students are challenged to express their ideas freely in creative writing
depending on existing creativity. Writing contains the meaning of pouring out what the
author thinks or feels that arises from the author's thoughts in written form (Boyle et al.,
2019).
Students should utilize technology that may be used to enhance enthusiasm in
creative writing during the current Covid-19. The researcher focused on an application to
help EFL student learning called Canva to address the problem of student motivation in
writing. Canva is a form of innovation in learning English for writing skills. Students
automatically recognize the digital features found in the Canva application and then apply
them to creative writing activities.
Canva is a twenty-first-century learning management system (LMS) that is
adaptable, dependable, easy to use and designed to help students reduce their time in their
classrooms and institutions (Utami & Suriyani D., 2021). Canva is a visual design tool
that makes it easy to create graphics. Canva is an all-in-one design app that allows for
creating and modifying visually appealing visuals. This app is ideal for improving writing
skills. Canva may be used to help increase learning. According to Smaldino et al., (2015),
visuals in the classroom, including Canva, can serve several purposes, including 1)
creating concrete abstract ideas; 2) motivating students; 3) giving direct attention; 4)
repeating the information; 5) remembering prior knowledge, and 6) making learning
effective.
Creative writing is a type of written work that develops from the author's ideas
into a more creative form by emphasizing aesthetics and flexibility of expression.
Creative writing activities offer students opportunities to dream up, prepare content,
express ideas and dreams freely, be active in the writing process, have fun while writing,
and produce authentic content (Göçen, 2019). Creative writing that prioritizes aesthetics
and beauty is closely related to the characteristics of writing literary works. It is closely

related to creative writing, which also studies literary works as writing materials with
aesthetic elements.
One of the benefits Canva can take is in doing interesting creative writing. This
application includes many templates to help students write their creative writing tasks
more quickly. Therefore, the Canva application is very appropriate during the current
pandemic because Canva can facilitate online student projects from the features provided.
It is hoped that by utilizing this application, students would learn to write more simply
through distance learning. This exercise will operate well even without face-to-face
interaction because the average student already owns a capable device.
For this reason, the researcher proposes to know students' perception of using the
Canva application to understand the new way of learning by using technology, not only
using paper but with technology; students can also be creative in creative writing. The
findings of this study are expected to be used as input for the Creative Writing course by
utilizing the Canva application to motivate students to make more exciting writing as an
addition to the impression of the aesthetic of writing.

LITERATURE REVIEW
Canva is a graphic design tool website that gives access to over a million photos,
graphics, and fonts in visual technological media that is drag and drop (Yundayani, 2019).
The Canva app can build student motivation in writing (Hadi et al., 2021). This media
also helps EFL students express themselves to communicate with others (Christiana &
Anwar, 2021). Canva gives a moment experience for students to engage in the creative
process, allowing them to repeat the material by recalling prior knowledge. Visual media
is a kind of media for language education applied as computer diagrams, whiteboard
pictures, photos, book graphics, and cartoons (Smaldino et al., 2015).
Canva has many uses for the classroom. According to Yuyun, (2018) stated that
student-centered teaching-learning activities can be done to deepen students'
understanding as well as explore their creativity by integrating it with the implementation
of the online application, namely Canva. The products of the project are posters, blogs,
and infographics that are submitted through virtual class (learning management system).
The advantages of the Canva application can be seen as follows: (1) This app has a
variety of attractive designs.; (2) Ready to develop educators' and students' imaginations
in designing learning media using the many elements that have been provided. (3) Spend
less time on practical learning media; (4) Canva does not require much time or effort in
the design process; (5) Users do not need to use a laptop to create; instead, they may do
it using a mobile (Tanjung & Faiza, 2019).
In addition to the advantages gained by this Canva application, some fundamental
disadvantages might also exist. Canva has a few disadvantages that you should be aware
of according to (Pelangi, 2020): (1) The Canva application is dependent on an adequate
and stable network connection; if the connection is weak, Canva cannot be accessed on
the web or on the device or PC to be used; (2) Formats, stickers, delineation, textual style,
and other features are available at a cost in the Canva application. However, given the
fact that many other formats are both interesting and free, this is no different. The

specifics of how users can plan something are imaginative and dependent on your
imagination; (3) Some of the chosen designs are similar to those of other users in terms
of format, image, color, and so on. However, this is not a problem; simply leave it up to
the user to select the design to be used; (4) The mobile app lacks more than half of the
functionality included in the desktop version. Canva's mobile app does not have identical
features as the website, Mac, or PC edition. Furthermore, it is more difficult to access the
various aspects in the mobile designing tab.
Creative writing is an approach that highlights imaginative self-expression; it also
indicates the ability of ESL/EFL students to respond creatively and spontaneously,
communicate their ideas freely, and express themselves well in writing and printing
(Ghani & Din, 2017). One of the most important objectives of creative writing activities
is to allow students to generate fluent, engaging, and authentic written texts rather than
dull and repetitive ones and allow them to exhibit their creative abilities while writing.
The author uses imagery to describe feelings or thoughts. Creative writing types include
poems, film and TV script plays, fiction (novel and short story), memoirs, freewriting
from photographs, and other techniques in the classroom for creative writing purposes.
(Durham, 1970; cited in Göçen, 2019).
According to Siswanjaya, (2021), using Canva in writing helps students give
visuals, color, photographs, photos, fonts, and graphics. Students had everything they
needed to construct their writing concepts. Finally, students may improve their writing
skills by using Canva as a technological medium. Students also learn how to utilize
technology in language learning. Furthermore, students think that studying a foreign
language is a fun activity. According to Jumami, (2021), the use of Canva in writing: (1)
supports them by providing pictures, color, images, photos, font, and graphics; (2)
students were equipped to develop their idea of writing. (3) Canva made them more
creative in English writing. (4) Canva as a technology media helps students improve the
quality of their writing skills.

METHODOLOGY
The researcher used a quantitative research approach. The research design of this
research is descriptive quantitative to collect and analyze the data. The data for this study
was taken from students of the English Language Education Study Program, Faculty of
Teacher Training and Education, Lambung Mangkurat University who have taken the
Creative Writing course and also used Canva as an application that supported them in
class. The sample for this research is 65 students. This sample selected based on the target
of the variables to be researched, and the researcher also conducted pre-research by listing
students who used the Canva application.
The data collected by using questionnaire and interview, as the instruments. The
researcher will give the participants a questionnaire to answer the five-point Likert scale,
which contains the indicators consisting of 24 questions. The Procedures are: (1) The
researcher prepared instruments to collect data; (2) The researchers used a questionnaire
and interview; (3) The statements in the Likert scale were about students' perceptions of
using the Canva application Creative Writing course. The sheets of Likert scale was

distributed to 44 students from a sample of ELESP students at Lambung Mangkurat

University; (4) After that, the instruments got validity from the expert judgement; (5) In
conducting the research, the researcher distributed the sheets of questionnaire to the
participants; (6) Conducted the interviews with the sample representative of
approximately 5 ELESP students of Lambung Mangkurat University; (7) After getting
data, the researcher analyzed the data and explained it descriptively, concluding as the
result of the study.
The procedures for the analysis are described below:
1) Analyze each indicator item using a Likert scale with a score of 1 to 5;
2) The data obtained was calculated for the total score. Calculate the total score of each
Likert scale indicator with the formula retrieved from https://www.diedit.com/skala-
likert/:
T×Pn
Information:
T= Total number of respondents
Pn= the choice of Likert scale score numbers
3) After doing calculations using the above formula, the results are added together, later
becoming the total score. Then, the total score is obtained to determine the highest
(Y) and lowest (X) scores for the analysis items.
4) Find out the highest (Y) and the lowest (X) scores of the assessment items.
Y = Highest score Likert scale x number of respondents
X = the lowest score on the Likert scale x the number of respondents
5) Determine the interval value for each score using the formula:

𝟏𝟎𝟎
𝐈=
(𝑵𝒖𝒎𝒃𝒆𝒓 𝒐𝒇 𝒔𝒄𝒂𝒍𝒆 (𝑳𝒊𝒌𝒆𝒓𝒕)

The following results had been obtained, I = !""#

= 20. The result I=20 (the
interval from the lowest score of 0% to the highest score of 100%).
6) After finding the interval value, then the score is interpreted according to the score
interpretation criteria, as follows:
Table 1: Score Interpretation Criteria
Range (%) Category
0% – 19,99% Strongly disagree
20% – 39,99% Disagree
40% – 59,99% Neutral
60% – 79,99% Agree
80% – 100% Strongly agree

7) The result of the interpretation value is then calculated using the index % formula as
follows:

𝐓𝐨𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐞
𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐱 % = × 𝟏𝟎𝟎

From the description above, the final calculation result is 57.7% in the "neutral"
category. It was concluded that students perceived about the obstacles of Canva in
Creative Writing class with a neutral perception. That is, students not only see the
advantages but also see the disadvantages. However, they still provide a positive
perception of using Canva.
Supporting findings were also found from interviews . The Canva needs a stable

From student interviews, the researcher also found some obstacles in students' time
management in using Canva in the process of writing and designing creative writing
projects. One student said that using Canva consumes a lot of time in the writing and
design process because there are too many features, choice of design templates, and
backgrounds that make students think for a long time to choose what kind of design they

Writing products by utilizing unique background, picture, and any other additional visual

provide great templates and features even though it's free…." Moreover, in improving
quality of creative writing, DAZ stated, "…the design from Canva elevates my writing to
look more pleasant, and I think my creative writing project has good design quality."

DISCUSSION
The researcher found many things. One of them is that the average value of the
application of Canva in Creative writing by students is in the high category, which means
that most students felt that Canva helped them to produce creative writings that could be
published into unique products, and students could explore their creativity by utilizing it
in their learning activities. As stated by one of the theories about the utility of Canva in
Creative Writing course, Canva also helps EFL students express themselves to
communicate with others (Christiana & Anwar, 2021). In addition, according Yuyun,
(2018) stated that student-centered teaching learning activities can be done to deepen
students' understanding as well as explore their creativity by integrating it with the
implementation of the online application, namely Canva. In another finding, Canva also
supports students in designing poetry, short story, and advertisement by utilizing the
elements, such as colors, images, and other available features. As stated by one of the
theories that using Canva in writing helps students give visuals, color, photographs,
photos, fonts, and graphics (Siswanjaya, 2021).
In the findings, the researcher found that most students felt Canva was a simple and
easy-to-use application in the writing and design process to produce creative writing
products. This finding is accordance with Mukti, (2021) that revealed using the Canva
application is feasible and easy to use to support students in learning activities. Moreover,
Jumami, (2021) also stated that Canva in creative writing makes it easy for them to enjoy,
have fun, understand and motivate them to learn English. Students are also more
motivated to write because the features provided are very interesting to add a more
creative writing experience. This was also revealed by Utami & Suriyani D., (2021) who
said that Canva can increase students' motivation in writing classes, with the motivation
of students in writing classes, learning will become more accessible to students and of
course learning will be successful because motivation is very important and students must
have motivation in learning. Besides that, in the findings, researcher also found that
Canva could create eye-catching designs for creative writing projects, and students
thought that students' imagination in designing can develop well. These results are
supported by the theory that said Canva may be used to create eye-catching designs for

social media, marketing campaigns, or projects; ready to develop educators' and students'
imaginations in designing learning media using the many elements that have been
provided (Tanjung & Faiza, 2019).
There are also several obstacles that might be faced by some students: students
needed a stable network to be able to access Canva, Canva features on mobile phones
were limited which made students had limited access, and Canva took a lot of time in the
design process because there were too many options design templates to be decided for
some students. These findings were in accordance with Pelangi, (2020) that revealed that
Canva application is dependent on an adequate and stable network connection; if the
connection is weak, Canva cannot be accessed on the web or on the device or PC, and
Canva's mobile app does not have identical features as the website, Mac, or PC edition.
For the time management also revealed by (Utami & Suriyani D., 2021), students having
to have more time to design programs using Canva. Moreover, students felt that Canva
sometimes did not give effect to their motivation to be creative if they only relied on the
available designs, without providing additional unique things to create them apart from
others. This result also is similar to the theory that said some of the choice designs are
similar to those of other users in terms of format, image, color; it makes students not
creative (Pelangi, 2020).
From the use of the Canva application in Creative writing, the researcher explored
findings about students' achievement which from students' experienced, then used Canva
as a tool to support their creative writing projects. Then, students' perceptions of
achievement have a positive impact on the quality of creative writing. Canva facilitated
students to be creative, imaginative, and encouraged them to find great ideas to become
extraordinary products. They also believed that Canva could boost their confidence by
leveraging of features such as design templates, images, icons, shapes, and backgrounds,
so that they became more creative people. This finding was also supported by findings
from Jumami, (2021), which stated that Canva can make students more creative in their
writing classes, and it is also easier for students to come up with ideas when using Canva.
Jumami, (2021) also said that the use of Canva in writing can support them by providing
pictures, color, images, photos, font, and graphics, and Canva as a technology tool helps
students to improve the quality of their writing skill.

the Canva application in a creative writing course and to know how Canva might help

hoped that by utilizing Canva, students would learn to write more simply through distance
learning.
Based on the result of the data analysis, it can be concluded that the use of Canva
in Creative Writing courses has a positive perception from students. The Canva
application makes it easy for students to express their feelings through available features
and designs for creative writing. Students also feel more creative, innovative, and
motivated to produce professional creative writing products. In addition, students also
feel more confident to publish their performances in writing. Not only positive
perceptions that students have, but there are also disadvantages to utilizing Canva, such
as students needing extra time to create programs using Canva, and Canva users needing
a stable internet network for efficient use because the unstable network may make it
difficult to export the finished product.
Certain suggestions were made to students, English teachers, and other researchers.
For students, Students are encouraged to explore new technological avenues like Canva
application that might help them with their creative writing assignments. For English
teacher, teachers should be innovative for their students and also be understood the
freedom and openness of students in expressing their creative writings in an audio-visual
application called Canva. For other researchers, researchers are expected to take more
samples to analyze student perceptions, for example taking at the university level so that
researchers can elaborate on the data completely and in-depth.
