Part 1: The Data - The data I had was selling gym equipment.

What is included in the rows is the country,

region (east or south), state, zip code, city, sales date, department, item name, sales, profit, and I added
profit ratio. To initially organize and analyze my data I took it to Excel and filtered the data. I first noticed
that some states had huge sales compared to others. Then, I broke that into regions. For example, I saw
what states made the most sales in the south and east, then compared them to each other. I also
compared each region to the differing years, which was used for some of the visualizations I used in my
project. Some other visualizations I used were data from what gym equipment was bought the most and
what brand of those ideas were the most popular. Some problems I had initially was trying to find and
organize all the data and trying to figure out what to show. At first, I was comparing all the data to each
other but then realized there are different regions and years the equipment was bought so that is when I
decided to compare those to each other.

Part 2: Workbook Sheets –

The first screenshot shows the sales of gym equipment, their profit, all the states, and both years in the
South and East. This screenshot gives an overall view of what I break down my data from. Showing all
the data from the states allows you to gauge what states give the most profit and what gym equipment
is the most popular. Then by comparing the years it allows you to see any major profit differences and
what the customer wants. By using this type of visualization, it allows you to see anything that sticks out,
trends, or differences among each other.

This second screenshot compares what gym equipment, ellipticals, rowing machines, and treadmills
were bought the most for both years and in both regions. I used this type of graph to be able to show
the large profit difference between the types of equipment. From a glance, you can tell that ellipticals
are the most popular than rowing machines and treadmills. At first, I only analyzed the year 2020 but
thought it would be even more beneficial to compare both years to each other. After doing that you can
see that the profit went down from 2020 to 2021. Less people bought gym equipment but ellipticals are
still the most popular machine.
The third screenshot is profit from the south. I decided to compare the South sales to the East. From this
screenshot, you can see that Florida, Georgia, and North Carolina had the most sales from the south. I
also added the Department of Equipment so you could see what each state ordered the most. In this
case, it seems to be that ellipticals are the most popular with treadmills coming in second. This
visualization helps to show the outstanding states and how much profit they are making from them. This
is smart to know for a company to push and advertise certain gym equipment and what states they
would profit from the most. In this case, ellipticals in Florida would be a good state to prioritize
promoting.

The fourth screenshot compares the sales in the East. The East seems to be a bit more profitable than
the South with more sales and more states ordering gym equipment. The main states in the east
are New York, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. The biggest difference I noticed was that the South only
had three main states buying gym equipment and making a profit, but the East, even though
they are small, had more states purchasing gym equipment. However, I am seeing similarities
that ellipticals are still the most popular gym equipment when comparing the East and South.
Then treadmills came second, and rowing machines came in last. This visualization can show the
profit differences between the states in the East. It gives a good visual to see how much certain
states soar over others.
The fifth screenshot gives us the visualization of what states in the south have the largest profit. I added
color to be able to show the states that stick out. For example, the red/orange-colored states are
the ones with the highest profit. These are the ones that stick out while the rest of the
states/colors blend in easily with each other since they all are about the same profit. To show,
Florida, Georgia, and North Carolina are the states with the highest profit, and using this type of
visualization allows that to be seen easily.

The Sixth screenshot is about the same as the one above however this one compares the East region.
Using this type of visualization allows you to see any major data that stands out. The states that
stand out in the eastern region are Ohio, New York, and Pennsylvania. Every other state blends in
with each other because they all around the same profit.
The seventh screenshot shows the profit in the South of the gym equipment, the equipment brand, and
compares the year that they were bought. Still, ellipticals are the most popular bought gym equipment
but now we can compare which brands were the most popular. We can see that Bowflex Max in both
years was the most popular brand of elliptical, then Horizon EX-59 in second. We can all see from this
visualization that profit for ellipticals was higher in 2021 than in 2020 but rowing machines and
treadmills stayed about the same.

The eighth and final screenshot compares the years and profits of all the states in the East. It breaks
down the gym equipment and the brands. It allows us to see what the most popular items are among
those in the eastern states. We can see from this visualization that ellipticals are continuously the most
popular and that the brand bowflex max is the most profitable. We all see that when we compare the
years that 2020 was more profitable than 2021 with ellipticals and rowing machines, but treadmills were
more popular in 2021 than in 2020.

Part 3: Workbook Dashboard –

The component I added to this dashboard was Profit in the South which showed gym equipment and the
brand it was. It compares the profit from the years 2020 and 2021 but is also interactive to show each
year individually. Next to the profit I added sales in the south that showed sales by each state. Doing this
allows you to see which states give you the most profit/sales and which ones give you the least. Lastly,
the chart above it all wraps both charts/concepts together to visually show the sales of each state. You
can also click on each state to get a more detailed report on their sales. I also did the same for the East.

Part 4: The Story:

Pane 1:
Pane 1: To start, I began looking at the data by comparing the sales from 2020 and 2021 from all states.
This gave a general idea of what states stuck out and which ones didn’t.

Pane 2:

Pane 2: Next, I wanted to narrow down the sales from each year by the types of machines. It became
clear that ellipticals were the top sellers, then rowing machines, and lastly treadmills.
Pane 3:

Pane 3: Then I wanted to compare the sales from the south and the east. In this pane, I am looking at
the sales in the south to see what states the most/least sales in the south had as well as what sold the
best in each state.

Pane 4:
Pane 4: Then I looked at the east side and its sales. The states that stuck out were New York,
Pennsylvania, and Ohio. Comparing the South and East I saw that the East had more sales than the
South.

Pane 5:

Pane 5: Continuing, I compared the sales in the south of the gym equipment and their specific brand as
well as sales each year. This gave me an idea of what the South purchased the most and from what
brand and which year did the best.

Pane 6:
Pane 6: Still comparing the South to the East, I can see that in both they prefer to buy ellipticals from
bowflex max. However, in the East, more people bought their equipment in 2020 but in the South, they
had better profit in 2021.

Pane 7:

Pane 7: I think wanted to take a closer look at the top-selling/profitable state. In the South, the most
profitable states are Florida, Georgia, and North Carolina. This is good for businesses to know so they
know where to advertise.

Pane 8:
Pane 8: Now I wanted to look at the highest-selling states in the East. This gives a good comparison
between the South and East as well as tells marketers where to sell their products. From comparing the
East and the South in this way you can see that the South is the most profitable with 30,000,000 more in
sales.

Pane 9 & 10:

Pane 9 and 10: Both these panes are together. I wanted to narrow down further on the most profitable
states. Therefore, in the South, Florida is the most profitable. I then compared these two panes based on
sales from 2020 and 2021. You can tell from these panes that continuously, ellipticals are the most
productive and that they sold more in 2021 than in 2020.

Pane 10 & 11:

Pane 10 and 11: They compare the highest-selling state in the East, which is New York. We can tell what
this state bought the most gym equipment, their brand, and how much in sales they had in each year.

Conclusion:

Part A:

To improve profit, I would try to sell/promote more ellipticals. It is popular among many states as it is
sold the most. Or I would try and find out buyer behavior. For example, why other gym types of
equipment such as treadmills and rowing machines are not as popular. I would also recommend
promoting and advertising heavier in the states that buy gym equipment the most. From the narrowed
data we can conclude that Florida, Georgia, and North Carolina are the most profitable in the South, and
in the East, Ohio, New York, and Pennsylvania are the more profitable. Doing this would be able to
improve sales and profit.

Part B:

I learned a lot about Tableau. I learned that it is a very good tool to sort and narrow down large amounts
of data. It allows you to combine and connect all aspects of data and show comparisons that you maybe
wouldn’t have been able to see without it. An obstacle I had to overcome was organizing a large amount
of data, but once I got an idea it was easy to sort. I liked being able to use a variety of charts as well as
maps. I am more of a visual learner therefore tableau is a good platform to look at data and dive deep.
