Part 1

For this project the data that was analyzed was about gym machines, specifically three departments of
them: ellipticals, rowing machines, and treadmills. These machines were divided into 12 item names
depending on the department. The data was conducted in the South and East of the United States,
showing all sales and profits made by each state, its cities and zip codes during 2020 and 2021.

The method that I used at the beginning of this project to analyze my data was by using Excel and
filtering all these categories, such us region, departments, sales, etc. The reason why I used Excel is
because I first wanted to know or have an idea of my data, like its trends, for example what department
was selling the most according to the region, what item names were not selling at all, and among other
trends.

The visualizations that I created were with the purpose of understanding all the data easier, for example,
my first visualization is a map that shows all the locations where the products are selling. Seeing a map
of the areas where the sales and profits come from provides more clarity. The next worksheets also
enhance the understanding of the data by going into more depth. Nevertheless, while I was doing the
visualizations, I did notice some errors in the data, especially with the profit rate; there were some cities
that have a profit rate greater than 100% which doesn’t make sense unless the company is selling these
machines that cost them nothing.

Part 2

The first visualization is about the exact locations (State, City, Zip-code) where all the products were sold,
as well as its sales and profits. The map shows circles of three distinct colors. The color red shows the
locations where their profits are not doing good at all, the color yellow shows profits that are making
profits but not good enough, and the green color shows the locations where profits are greater than
sales meaning they’re good standing. In this vizualization I learned that most of the states need to
increase their profits, since only Pennsylvania is making profits. Additionally, the size of the circle shows
how well the products sold, in other words the bigger the circle the bigger the sales. Visualizing all these
factors on a map improves the understanding of each location and how they are doing in terms of sales
and profits, which is why it led me to choose this graph. The presented data in the map is analytic
because by knowing locations, sales, and profits of each state it can be known whether they need to
improve or are doing good.

This graph shows exactly what each state is selling, the department and the item name. In this
vizualization I learned that the east cities, especially New York, Ohio, and Pennsylvania are selling the
most. As well as the departments that people buy from are treadmills and ellipticals wether in the South
or East. This vizualizion was made because I wanted go in deep in what exactly the states are selling and
how much profit are they making, which can be seen if I click on one of the bars. The visualization is
meaningful because by knowing what items are not being sold it can be assumed that perhaps it needs
help in its marketing field or even switch to other machine more appealing to their customers.
The third visualization shows the difference between 2020 and 2021 in terms of profit and sales
according to item. The color red shows where profits were not made, the color yellow shows where
profits were barely made, and the color green shows where profits were successfully made. In this
worksheet I learned that sales and profits decreased in 2021 in most of the machines. What led to this
visualization was to check for improvement over the years, however it was all the opposite, most of the
sales were reduced in 2021, which made their profits less than in the past year. This graph is relevant
because it demonstrates that people stop buying working out machines as they used to, and this
meaningful because perhaps the reason for this in the pandemic we went through; in this case pushing
sales through marketing strategies, such as promotions, ads, etc. could improve the performance of their
sales.
The pie chart show the profit ratio in each state in 2020 and 2021, as well as othe factor shuch as sales,
department, and region. What I learned about this graph is that in some states in 2021, such as in North
Carolina the sales decreased but its profit rate increased, which is relevant to the perfomance of the
company because even though they are not selling as much as before they are still making profit. I
wanted to create this visulization because compared to the previos ones, this one focuses on how well
the company is doing terms of profit, which is an important analytic fact for them if they want to
continue selling a specific department that generates them profits.

Part 3
In my dashboard I included the map of sales and profits and a bar graph showing what is being sold
according to the state chosen on the map. These two visualizations interact with each other because
they demonstrate a full understanding of what is going on in a specifics state, particularly what are the
selling?, how much are their sales?, are their profits big enough?, etc. In this case Pennsylvania is making
profit and its sales are great, most of them are coming from the rowing machine “Aviron Strong”, the
treadmill “Peloton Tread,” and the Elliptical “Bowflex Max.”

Part 4
By looking at the map and seeing the different colors and sizes of the circles and understanding their
meaning, we can get to know the sale and profits around the United States, in this case from the East
and south region of the country. Now that we have an idea of these factors, we can see what each state
is selling, the department and item that is selling the most and which are not. The next thing to analyze
is how well the company did over the year, as well as whether there was a significant difference between
the sales and profits made in each item of the department. Knowing this information now we can move
on and see the profit ratio each state is making and the main department their sales are coming from.
Lastly the dashboard lets the user interact with the state and its specific city, and zip code, to see what
this location is selling and how much it is making in terms of sales and profit.

Part 5

A. Some recommendations are to check for errors in the data since when plotting the data into the
graphs it doesn’t make sense, particularly when I calculated the profit ratio it exceeded 100%
meaning the products of the company cost them nothing. Another recommendation is to
improve their marketing strategies, in most states their sales are doing poorly, so having
promotions, interacting, and listening to the customers’ wants and needs could improve this.
B. Personally, I think Tableau was one of the programs that I found most useful throughout the
semester since my major business I think is fundamental to know how analyze data and how to
visualize it so it can be more comprehensive. Some of the obstacles that I encountered were
determining what type of graph I should use, I wanted show everything that was going on with
the company but I feel it would’ve been better if more graph visualizations were given.
