TOPIC & SYNOPSIS OF PLENARY SESSION

Redesigning Schools of the Future:

From Pedagogy to Heutagogy?
Conducted by Dr. Charles Chew

The twin forces of globalization and the relentless technological

modernization have continued to transform the world of work and
the way people live. As such, schools have a critical role to play in
preparing our learners to be global citizens and skilful workforces
of the future.

As mission-driven educators for the nation, we need to constantly

ask ourselves whether the current model of education is adequate
to equip our learners with the necessary values, skills and knowledge
to be global citizens and skilful workforces of the future.

By means of an interactive lecture, this 1-hour plenary session

seeks to redesign schools of the future by reflecting on these two
key inquiry questions:
1. What are the eight critical characteristics in learning content
and experiences that have been identified to define high-quality
learning in the Fourth Industrial Revolution—“Education 4.0 ”?
2. Besides innovative pedagogies, how can we make use of the
four principles of heutagogy to infuse these eight critical
characteristics in the school’s instructional and enrichment
programmes?

TOPICS AND SYNOPSES OF TRACK 1

Pedagogy Practices
Conducted by Dr. Lai Chee Chong

1st Session: 21st Century Student-Centred Pedagogy

Over the years, traditional teacher-directed classroom instruction has been
progressively transformed into a student-centred learning environment. Such
transformation is driven by the rise of the global economy and the impact digital
advancements have made on society, business, education, and culture. Education,
therefore, paves the way to prepare students to acquire new skills that will enable
them to succeed in the 21st Century era. The workshop addresses pedagogical
approaches to infuse 21st Century Competencies in teaching and learning effectively
in the classroom
The workshop will cover the following learning objectives:
• Introduce an overview of 21st Century Competencies
• Incorporate 21st Century Competencies in teaching and learning
• Demonstrate examples of such practices in a student-centered
learning environment

2nd Session: Problem-based Learning in Classroom Instruction

Problem-based learning (PBL) is one of the constructivist’s pedagogical approaches.
It is a teaching method which involves groups of students learning about a subject
or a concept through the experience of solving a problem presented in some
meaningful context.
The workshop will cover the following learning objectives:
• Introduce the principles of Problem-based Learning (PBL)
• Demonstrate examples of PBL in a student-centred learning environment
• Provide participants with hands-on activities to experience some pedagogical
strategies

TOPICS AND SYNOPSES OF TRACK 2

Digital Literacy & Technology

Conducted by Ms. Koh Siew Peng & Ms. Celina Lee

1st Session: Coding in STEM Education by Ms. Koh Siew Peng

In order to succeed and thrive in today’s 21st Century society, the demand for different
skillsets has risen significantly. Teaching topics like Computational Thinking to students
from an early age is one highly effective means of meeting this need, all while increasing
learners’ self-concept and interest in the field, and providing potential career guidance.
This workshop begins with:
• An introduction to Computational Thinking concepts
• Writing Pseudocode
• Translating Pseudocode into flowcharts to derive solutions
• Creating a Computational Thinking lesson plan to implement in the classroom

Discover how Computational Thinking approaches in the form of interactive technologies

and/or accompanying apps prepare students as future citizens in a society growing
increasingly intertwined with technology.
The workshop will cover the following learning objectives:
1. Developing Computational Thinking
2. Applying Computational Thinking and design a lesson plan
3. Coding and STEM projects to promote self-directed learning

2nd Session: Using Artificial Intelligence for Teaching and Learning

by Ms. Celina Lee
Empowered by Artificial Intelligence, teachers can engage the best technology has to offer
to continue doing what they do best – impart knowledge and inspire teachability to nurture
the future generation. Education is one of the most powerful engines used to drive change
and incite progress in the society. In this session, learn more about how we can leverage
on what we now have to build a better tomorrow for our learners!
The workshop will cover the following learning objectives:
• Uses of technology in the classroom today
• An introduction to Digital English Campus
• Infusing elements of DEC into our traditional classroom to better engage our students

TOPICS AND SYNOPSES OF TRACK 3

Leadership & Professional Development

Conducted by Dr. Charles Chew

1st Session: Fostering an Effective Professional Learning

Community (PLC) at your school
The objective of this Breakout Session 1 is to equip participants with the knowledge and
skills in fostering an effective Professional Learning Community (PLC) at their respective
schools.
The workshop will cover the following learning objectives:
• Why PLCs?
• What is a PLC?
• What are the Characteristics & Benefits of schools as PLCs?
• What are the Roles and Responsibilities of Personnel in a PLC?
• What are Learning Teams?
• What are the Challenges and Key Success Factors?
• What are some suggested Tools and Templates?

2nd Session: Impact of Professional Development on

Teachers’ Practices
Research has shown that teachers lie at the heart of delivering quality education as they
play a pivotal role in creating vibrant “classrooms” filled with joyful and curious students
engaging in life-worthy and life-ready learning. As such, it is paramount for teachers to
aspire to become even better teacher professionals by engaging in lifelong learning.
Using the Post Teahouse social constructivist’s approach of Read, Discuss, Teach and
Practice (RDTP), the objective of this Breakout Session 2 is to equip participants with an
understanding of the impact of Professional Development (PD) on Teachers’ Practices.

The following 5 questions will frame the co-generative discussions:

• Why PD?
• What is PD?
• What are the 4 Main Types of PD?
• What are the Attributes of Effective PD?
• How do we know that the PD is impactful?
