SYMPTOMS EXPERIENCED BY SMOKERS WHEN THEY DO NICOTINE WITHDRAWAL

To stop smoking is not an easy thing to do. This happens due to a chemical substance that is called
nicotine contained in cigarettes. Nicotine is an addictive substance that can affect malfunction in
one’s brain which makes an addiction usually arises after consuming it. Therefore, it is not easy to
stop smoking because there will be symptoms experienced by smokers when they try to stop
smoking or, “Nicotine Withdrawal.”

According to WebMD, a website of health, said that there are two ways how nicotine withdrawal
works which are physical symptoms and emotional symptoms. Actually, there are some symptoms
that will be experienced by smokers when doing nicotine withdrawal. But, the most common
symptoms are headache and anxiety. The smokers will have a headache because nicotine is an
addictive substance. Nicotine may stimulate the pain-sensitive nerves as they pass through the back
of the throat, further increasing the tendency toward head pain. In some people, this stimulation can
contribute to headaches. Secondly, the smokers commonly have an anxiety because Smoking
relieves stress, so your anxiety can skyrocket when you quit. It tends to pop up around 3 days in and
can last a couple of weeks.

Dr. Nadia Nurotul Fuadah, a medical doctor in Depok Hospital, wrote in her blog that nicotine
withdrawal symptoms experienced smokers will appear about 30 minutes after they were last
exposed to nicotine and will peak after one to three days. These nicotine withdrawal symptoms will
slowly disappear after three to four weeks, depending on how long and how much they have been
smoking.
