In the late 1800's, there was no such thing as self-sufficiency.

It was simply
impossible. If you were able to grow enough food for your family to survive, then
you were in no position to produce the materials for their clothing. And the food
you grew would have been very limited one, maybe two crops with a small vegetable
garden on the side. You still had to purchase additional goods to help cook meals
and maintain a semblance of variety. You weren't able to produce the nails and
horseshoes for your farm and farm animals. If your wagon wheel or plow was damaged,
the materials for repair were not readily available. How about that lumber for your
home? The point is that you had no self-sufficiency. Time and again, towns were
started where the rural folk could gather and begin to build enough custom for the
non-farming community to provide much needed specialty services, such as general
store, mill and banking.

This new legality is powerful food for thought for parenting in the Facebook era.
As adults, we often express dissatisfaction at the ways young people post their
lives online. But if we turn the mirror on ourselves, do we as parents actually
have the right to make our family photos public? If so, which ones? This new norm
means that many children will have a powerful digital identity created by someone
else. This process can be likened to the manufacturing of celebrity identities,
where parents can potentially shape the public persona of their child in any way
they want: child genius, disobedient, fashionista, fussy eater and so on.

Expats stressed as Aadhaar becomes mandatory for tax returns -Expatriates living in
India would often complain about heat, food and dirt. Applying, registering and
getting an Aadhaar card might just extend the list of woes with another mandatory
tryst with India's famed red tape. Many expatriates would be required to obtain an
Aadhaar number. The Finance Act, 2017 has made it mandatory to enroll for Aadhaar
to file tax returns in India or apply for a PAN or keep the existing PAN active
effective July This applies to those who are eligible for Aadhaar and under the
Aadhaar Act, anyone who is in India for more than 182 days in aggregate in the past
12 months becomes eligible to obtain Aadhaar, experts said.

I am just one of many people who are too often forced to choose between providing
family with a place to sleep, food to eat, or heat to stay warm. In a time of a
family health crisis or a new baby's arrival, no one should have to go back to work
just to keep the lights on. No one should have to decide between a paycheck and
their family's health. I want to do everything I can to make sure no one else has
to make that devastating choice. That's why I was very active with my local union
to help pass this legislation in the first place.
