ACTION RESEARCH ON THE CAUSES OF

GRADE SIX PUPILS’ INABILITY TO SPELL


WORDS IN ENGLISH

I .Introduction
English is a very important subject in
the curriculum. It involves the four
communication skills-listening,
speaking, reading, and writing which
are necessary to enable us to
communicate effectively .Inorder to
express our thoughts and our feelings,
we need to speak and write them on
the printed page .In writing ,we need to
be accurate in our spelling or else ,we
will not be able to convey the right
meaning of what we think and feel.

II. Statement of the Problem


A study on the causes of inability
to spell words in English among Grade
Six pupils of Barangbang Elementary
School ,SY 2017-2018.
A. What causes Grade Six pupils’
inability to spell words in English?
B .What measures can be utilized to
improve pupils’ inability to spell words
in English?
III. Problem Analysis
Observations on informal themes
and formal themes written by Grade Six
pupils and results of diagnostic test in
spelling revealed that the causes of for
the deficiencies in spelling words in
English are:
A .Inadequate vocabulary in English
B .Lack of reading comprehension skills

IV .Hypotheses
The following hypotheses were
advanced for this study.
A. If children were given sufficient
reading materials, then they will enjoy
reading it at the same time develop
their vocabulary and spelling ability.
B. If spelling ability had been developed
among our pupils in the primary grades,
they will find it easy to write
paragraphs and compositions in English.

V .Action
All the 34 grade VI pupils of
Barangbang Elementary School ,SY
2017-2018 were gathered by the
researcher to find out their spelling
ability .They were a given a diagnostic
test in spelling using the Dolch
Common Nouns.
To improve the spelling ability of
Grade Six pupils ,the following methods
and activities were undertaken.
A. Teaching words in spelling by using
the Home Method every week-using
the pre-test, study ,second test, study,
and final test procedure for five days.
B. Providing supplementary reading
books to pupils to be read at home.
C. Writing paragraphs and compositions
in their informal theme and formal
theme notebooks.
D .Putting up a mini-LRC inside the
classroom to encourage pupils to read
the newspaper ,books ,and magazines
during their free time.
At the end of the school year ,a
year-end achievement test in spelling
was administered to all Grade Six pupils
.The result was remarkable because
there was a great increase in their
scores.

VI. Evaluation
The study revealed that the spelling
ability was greatly improved because
they were provided with sufficient
reading materials to increase their
vocabulary. The study revealed that the
Grade VI pupils’ inability to spell words
in English was caused by inadequate
vocabulary.

VII. Generalization\Conclusions
Based on the tests conducted, the
study revealed that the grade six pupils’
inability to spell words in English was
caused by inadequate vocabulary in the
English language and lack of reading
comprehension skills.
Likewise ,teaching spelling using
the Home method ,providing
supplementary reading materials to
pupils, providing a mini-LRC inside the
classroom ,and frequent practice on
writing compositions and paragraphs
can greatly improve pupils’ inability to
spell words in English.

VIII .Recommendations
A. Teachers from grade one to
Grade six should use the Home Method
in teaching spelling because it is very
effective.
B. Parents should help in
supervising and providing for their
children’s reading activities.
C. Teachers should provide
sufficient reading materials for pupils to
enrich their vocabulary.
