India is one of the most disaster prone countries in the world.

Over 65% land area vulnerable to earthquakes;


70% of land under cultivation prone to drought;
12% of land to floods;
8% of land (8,000 km coastline) to cyclones.
A Major Disaster occurs every 2-3 years;
50 million people affected annually
1 million houses damaged annually along with human, social and other
losses
Recent report of UNISDR said India suffered $80 billion during the 20
year period from 1998 to 2017.

Until 2001 – Responsibility with Agriculture Ministry

Responsibility Transferred to MHA in June 2002 as an


Interim Arrangement

DM Act passed in December 2005.


The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) was constituted to
lay down the policies, plans and guidelines for disaster management.
NDMA Vision

“To build a Safe and Disaster Resilient India by developing a


holistic, pro-active, multi-disaster and technology-driven
strategy through a culture of prevention, mitigation,
preparedness and efficient response.”
