QUESTION 1

For the stress element shown below, find: Y

220 MPa
108 MPa

320 MPa
X

1.1 The principal stresses and their directions relative to the XY plane.
1.1 Maximum shear stress.
1.3 Show the stresses at 30° to the XY plane on a Mohr’s circle
[10]
QUESTION 2

A thin walled pressure vessel, diameter 250 mm is formed by welding an

8 mm thick plate as shown below. The pipe has an internal pressure of 1.3
MPa. Calculate the resultant stress on the weld as shown. (find: the direct
and shear stress at 22º as shown; relative to the circumference). Plot the
stresses on a Mohr’s circle.
22º

[15]

QUESTION 3

Calculate the maximum slope and deflection of the beam shown below if
E = 210 GPa and I = 160 x 10-6 m4

[10]
QUESTION 4

Find the maximum deflection for a simply supported beam of length L if it has a
uniformly distributed load W kN over its length, and a point load P at the
centre.

[10]

QUESTION 5

A solid shaft has an outside diameter of 80 mm. It transmits 60 kW at 650

rpm and is subjected to an axial compressive load of 25 kN and a bending
moment of 1 kNm. Sketch the stress element on the shaft showing the
three possible stress states (top, middle and bottom of shaft). Hence
calculate:

5.1 The position and value of maximum principal stress within the shaft.
5.2 The position and value of maximum shear stress in the shaft.
[15]

QUESTION 6

A thin steel drum 5 m long and 2 m in diameter has a wall thickness of 30

mm. There is an internal pressure of 5 MPa. Find:
 Circumferential and longitudinal strains on the outer surface
 Change in volume of the drum
Given: E = 200 GPa and ν = 0.28
