INTRODUCTION

 The experiential reflective paper is about individual assignment for student
bachelor in science (hons) culinary art management who take the subject “Food and
Society” or HTC556. In this reflective paper student must be able to write about their
experience that they having during the “Movement Control order”(MCO). Malaysian
were facing the pandemic “Corona virus” or more known as (Covid19) situation. In
17 march 2020, the Prime Minister in Malaysia which Tan Sri Dato Muhyiddin Bin
Haji Muhammad Yassin announce the first extension of movement control order
(MCO) were start at 12AM 18 March 2020. after the announce implemented, the
movement of people in Malaysia are limited.

Beside that, for this reflective paper, student would be able to write their
experience during the movement control order. Therefore, student must write their
experience that they have during the pandemic corona virus in Malaysia and related
the topic with any chapter in the syllabus that they have learn in subject Food and
Society. Otherwise, this assignment covers the challenge for the society when they are
facing the pandemic corona virus. For example, the challenge for society relation such
as food, society and authority. The government trying to prevent the spread of this
virus with the cancellation of flight ticket from 18march, the closure of public
facilities, self quarantine, cancellation all event with others countries, having a social
distance at least 1 meter with others when purchasing food , cannot eating in all food
shop or cafeteria like “Restaurant Mamak, McDonald, KFC and all premise that sell
food, the road laws are tightened and only 1 person using 1 car. After the movement
control order, the society need to change and accept the new norm of life which is the
society need to stay at home until the virus recover in Malaysia.

In addition, this assignment also might should student to learn how to choose any
method appropriate social theory that they been exposed in subject food and society
during the open and distance learning. Open distance learning is a general term to use
of telecommunication to provide or enhance learning. During the movement control
order, (MCO) all student need to attend class though the application such as “Google
Classroom, Google Meet, Whats App, Facebook live and Telegram”. Furthermore,
this assignment also show the ability of student to identify their experience and the
knowledge about the situation in Malaysia during the movement control cover(MCO)
and how they handle the situation during the movement control order (MCO).

Putting in nutshell, this assignment might able to student write their experience
that they have during the pandemic corona virus in Malaysia and related the topic
with any chapter in the syllabus that they have learn in subject Food and Society.
Therefore, this assignment also teach student to learn how to choose any method
appropriate social theory that they been exposed in subject food and society during
the open and distance learning. Otherwise, this assignment is about covers the
challenge for the society when they are facing the pandemic corona virus in their
countries. For example, how they covers the challenge during the pandemic corona
virus and related this challenge to the topic that they have learns in the studies in
subject Food and Society.

FOOD SELECTION

 Food selection is a syllabus from the course food and society which is in chapter
6. This topic was choose to related with movement control order(MCO) that have
been happened in Malaysia 2020. This is because , the food selection is important
among the society. This chapter was been selected to distinguish for the society life
before and after the movement control order (MCO) was implemented by
government. Food selection is a part of daily activities for society in around the world.
So, it can be related to the situation during the movement control order (MCO) in
Malaysia.

Food selection

I. Food selection by cost .

Food is the part of the daily activities that all people must carry on . Through the
food , the society can continue their life in the world. Cost is often the second most
important influence on food choice, and income level is the most significant socio
demographic factor in predicting selection.The wealthier the society, the less
disposable income is spent on food. Typically the people poorer culture survive on a
diet dependent on grains or tubers and limited protein, including meat, poultry, fish,
dairy foods, and only a small variety of fresh fruits or vegetables available. However,
people with income consistently, include more meats, sweets in their food selection.

Before the movement control order (MCO) was being implemented, many people
will choose the food based on the cost that they have. This situation because the
differences of their live style. Maybe for the poorer people , they want to save their
budget to pay others things. After the movement control order started in 18 March
2020, the norm of people life was changed . This is because maybe they scare the
countries will suffering from food shortage . When the government announce the
movement control order (MCO) , all people stay in Malaysia rushing going to
supermarket to purchase food to survive their life during the pandemic corona virus or
Covid-19. This is because, the government were announce that there no movement
after 18 March 2020 and anyone that refuse the laws will get the punishment.

II. Food selection by taste

Taste is defined broadly by sensory properties detectable in foods which is

colour, aroma, flavour and the texture. For human anticipate specific food will have
certain sensory characteristic like deviating can signal that the item is poisonous or
spoiled. For example, most core foods are pale white, cream or brown in colour,
however some West Malaysia prefer the bright and the core item be n anticipated
colour such as green or blue it may be rejected.

Before the movement control order (MCO) was being implemented, human will
enjoy the food in cafeteria or restaurant. Otherwise, people will only eating in they
favourite place because of the taste of the place are hit with them. This is because
maybe they have no time to cook their meal everyday so they decide to purchase the
ready meals in the restaurant. Therefore, after the movement control order (MCO) ,
many premise restaurant were closed because of the movement control order that
prime minister has announce before and want to save food to others people who live

in Malaysia. During the movement control order(MCO) , many premise are closed
too. Only the important jobs like food riders, the police, fire man, doctor, nurse are
allowed for work as usual. Therefore , people rarely buy the food from outside
because they have a time to cook for their self and can decide what the taste of food
the want . Putting in the nutshell, there no more wasting of food because people only
eat what they want to eat.

FOOD ROLE IN FAMILY AND SOCIETY

Food role in family and society is a syllabus for chapter seven from subject food
and society. This topic was choose to related with movement control order(MCO) that
have been happened in Malaysia 2020 because food were important thing in the role
of family and society. This chapter was been selected to distinguish for the society life
before and after the movement control order (MCO) that was implemented by
government. Food was the one of part between the family and society in the world.
So, it can be related to the situation during the movement control order (MCO) in
Malaysia.

Food and family

I. The proper meal between family life

Food is the important thing to human continue their life day by day. Actually,
with food, they can create feeling love between their family members. This is
because, food not just give us full fill the stomach but also create the important
role between family members. Before the movement control order(MCO) were
announce, we all know that people were always busy with their commitment and
task in their job. This is because, all society were busy getting money to save for
their property in the world. Otherwise, the society such as the head of family
which is father and mother didn’t have time to serve the proper meal to their
children and always buy outside food to their child.

After the pandemic of corona virus being around the world, their life style
were totally change. The movement control order (MCO) in Malaysia was make a
bigger changes in food and family. This is because when the movement control
order (MCO) were announce by Prime Minister, all society only need to stay at
home until the pandemic corona virus gradually recover. Therefore, when the
family stay at home, its good things because they can only focus into their child
food. During the movement control order (MCO) , there’s only the supermarket
that sell daily requirement were allowed to open their premise. The premise food
were open but only for take away the food for avoid the virus were spread.

Putting in nutshell, the food role in family and society were related to
pandemic corona virus or Covid-19 because without food , family will never can
survive their life during the pandemic corona virus and the movement control
order (MCO) that happen in Malaysia started 18 March 2020. Besides that,
family can practice doing the proper meal to their family during the pandemic
corona virus .

CONCLUSION

As we can conclude, using this assignment, student would be able to write their
experience during the movement control order. This is because, the assignment were
related to their daily life situation during the pandemic corona virus and the
movement control order (MCO) . Next, using this assignment student also might
understand how to learn and to choose any method appropriate social theory that they
been exposed in subject food and society during the open and distance learning. This
is because, when it related to their daily life , its more easier to understand and more
appreciate their studies. However, the pandemic corona virus also have the benefits
and the bad impact to our life .

The benefits of this pandemic corona virus is after the movement control order
(MRO) were announce by Prime Minister, people doesn’t choose what kind of food
they want to eat. This is the one of benefits of the movement control order (MCO) .
This is because,in the movement control order people would appreciate the values of
food. Otherwise, people will save food for survive their life during the pandemic
corona virus and never wasting the food anymore. Before the pandemic corona virus,
people always wasting their food. For example, they were eating at restaurant and
didn’t like the food that they have order and they left the food without finishing their
food.

However, the bad impact of food because the pandemic corona virus is Due to the
movement control order that was enforced since mid-March, many restaurants, cafes,
bakery and convenient stores were impacted by the pandemic which forces many
business to become defunct or dissolved, and each affected stores were placing up the
banner regarding the premises is for sale or rent, although some stores has been
dissolved few days earlier prior to movement control order (MCO). However, not all
dissolved business placed up the banner yet as their rental contract has yet to be
expired. The dissolving of business was attributed to lockdown and curfews which
prevents many people from having dinner and supper in restaurants during night time,
which were exacerbate further by high rental fees and landlord's refusal to reduce the
rental fees.

Putting in nutshell, the pandemic corona virus can give us benefit and also the
bad impact to our society. This is because, the family can get together in home, the
family can get the proper meal by cooking them self and the most important things is
there’s no food was waste in the new norm life style. However, the bad impact is
government has to make an effort for gain the countries economy and many
restaurants, cafes, bakery and convenient store were impacted by the pandemic which
forces many business to become defunct or dissolved, and each affected stores were
placing up the banner regarding the premises is for sale or rent, although some stores
has been dissolved few days earlier prior to MCO lockdown.
