STANDARD membrane tube diffuser installed on holder
PLQPP
1. INTRODUCTION
1.2 STORAGE
The diffusers are to be stored in their original packaging in a dry and well-ventilated
place in accordance to DIN 7716. Do not store in the open! Measures have to be tak-
en to keep the diffusers away from UV-radiation (sunshine), frost, dust and works
(e.g. welding) close to the storage place.
The diffusers should be installed and operated not later than 3 months after delivery
to avoid possibly harmful environmental influences. Long time storage of some spare
parts for replacement is possible but due to fast response of our service not neces-
sary in large numbers.

2. ASSEMBLY OF DIFFUSERS
The diffusers must be mounted and connected to air supply tube with the designated
holder.

In an optimal way the holder should be mounted height adjustable. Uniform diffuser
performance is among other things dependent on an exact setting.
In order to avoid clogging of diffusers, the air supply pipes and the tank must
be cleaned from impurities before connecting/mounting the membrane tube
diffusers .
It is obligatory to use our special mounting tool for the membrane diffuser.
Do not grab around the membranes and do not install the diffusers by using
hands instead of the mounting tool and a wrench!
• Air supply pipe has to be screwed with 5 to 6 turns into the 3/4“ thread of the dif-
fuser.
• The installation is correct, if the air channel of the diffuser points towards the
basin floor (exact 6 o’clock position).
Membrane_Tube_Diffuser_STANDARD_e1.fm / 18.3.15
• The ridge on the other side of the air channel must be upturned (exact 12 o’clock
position) Membranes have a blue line which indicates the position of the ridge
under the membrane.

• The seal tape should be replaced if damaged. The tighten down process can be
repeated if necessary. Do not lubricate the seal surface!
ON HOLDER SIDE
• When using recommended end cap and special holder the correct position of
ridge / blue line (upwards) and air channel (downwards) are ensured and fixed.

No work may be done in the diffuser area after the diffusers have been placed;
All works in or at the basin could cause damage to the diffusers (e.g. painting
or welding).
START-UP
During trial run, at latest before filling the sewage tank, air must be put through the
diffuser for at least 24 hours , in order to guarantee optimum diffuser aeration and to
activate the entire perforation of each membrane.
Should operation not start immediately after the test run, the water coverage must
be ensured. This water coverage must be maintained until the system is put into op-
eration. A new start-up procedure (see above) is required.
To avoid aging of membranes, the period between installation and trial run should be
as short as possible. Water coverage of diffusers is required during this time.
3. OPERATION
Water temperature must be between 5° and 35° C. Higher temperatures are possible
but please consult your HAMANN AG representative in this case for additional infor-
mation.
The diffusers should be operated once a week for about 30 minutes minimum.
This way biological and chemical precipitations can be kept away from the
pores sufficiently („stretching“).
Adjusted air flow rate must not be increased without consulting HAMANN AG!
It is recommended that the diffusers are taken out of the tank and conduct the re-
placement at an appropriate work place.
The centre line of the non perforated area of the membrane has to be adjusted ex-
actly on top of the ridge. Membranes do have a blue line in the mid of the non perfo-
rated area. This blue line has to be positioned exactly on top of the ridge.

Membrane tube diffusers operate reliable and do not ask for intensive maintenance.
Still regular control and maintenance is strongly recommended.
Deposits on the diffuser are usually not harmful to the membrane but might affect the
pressure loss and bubble pattern and have a negative impact on the membrane per-
foration. Biological films are known to reduce the life time on rubber membranes.
Wastewater contains various components which to a certain extend do settle on the
membrane. Some are mentioned below:
• carbonate (water hardness)
• iron- and aluminium salts (precipitants)
• biological cover/films
• polymers (sludge conditioning)
5.1 LIFETIME
Membranes are suitable for use in usual shipboard waste water quality.
The lifetime of a diffuser is mainly depending on the actual waste water conditions.
Therefore the suitability and quality of the chosen membrane material is important.
Please discuss the given situation with the HAMANN AG representative to make a
sustainable choice.
This means the amount of technical wastewater may not exceed 20% of the total
wastewater flow. In case of questions please contact your HAMANN AG representa-
tive.

In order to maintain an economic operation and a satisfactory life cycle follow the in-
structions in this document.
Layers and crusts have to be removed in regular intervals and membrane ma-
terial must be appropriate.
Monitor the development of your air supply pressure or the air flow rate. Define
a project-specific critical value. Cleaning/maintenance should be initiated
when this value is reached.
