DLE 1253 INVESTIGATION TECHNIQUES ANSWER SHEET

(c) Firstly, B-DNA refers to the double helix form of DNA in which the chain rotates and to
the right around the front of the helix axis. But, Z-DNA refers to an unusual double helix
shape where the chain rotates left and right around the front of the helix axis. Also, it has 12
base pairs on each helical turn and one groove on the outer surface. Moreover, B-DNA
forms under normal physiological conditions, Z-DNA forms under high salt concentrations.
Furthermore, B-DNA contains a wide and deep major groove and a narrow and deep minor
groove while Z-DNA contains a naroow and deep major groove and a wide and shallow
minor groove. Also, another difference between B-DNA and Z-DNA is the orientation of
sugar residues. The sugar residues in B-DNA have a variable orientation while the sugar
residues in Z-DNA do not change. Finally, while B-DNA is right-handed, Z-DNA is left-
handed, this is the key difference between B-DNA and Z-DNA.
