INVESTIGATION ON
FIELD ORIENTED
CONTROL OF PMSM
MOTOR USING ANN
CONTROLLERS
INTRODUCTION TO FOC

• The need of MAXIMUM TORQUE PER AMPERE(MTPA) in PMSM motor can be

achieved by the implementation of FOC.
• In simple words, a motor which produces less amount of torque for a
particular amount of ampere without FOC, can produce more torque for
the same input of current with the implementation of FOC.

M M

Without FOC With FOC

Example: A motor with rated speed as 1500 rpm
given
a supply of 440V and 10A current as input

𝑴𝒆𝒄𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒍 𝑷𝒐𝒘𝒆𝒓 𝑻𝒐𝒓𝒒𝒖𝒆∗𝑺𝒑𝒆𝒆𝒅

=
𝑬𝒍𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒍 𝑷𝒐𝒘𝒆𝒓 𝑽𝒐𝒍𝒕𝒂𝒈𝒆∗𝑪𝒖𝒓𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒕

With FOC:

𝟐𝟔𝟓 ∗ 𝟏𝟓𝟎𝟎
𝑬𝒇𝒇𝒊𝒄𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒚% =
𝟒𝟒𝟎 ∗ 𝟏𝟎

= 90.3%
MAXIMUM TORQUE PER AMPERE(MTPA)

• MTPA can be achieved by maintaining the angle between stator

magnetic field position and rotor magnetic field position (or) rotor
position at 90 degree.

• Since, T ∝ sin δ

where, T = Torque of the motor

δ = The angle between stator magnetic field position

and rotor magnetic field position (or) rotor position
EXISTING SYSTEM

• The drawbacks of PI are that it gives rise to a longer

response time and a longer period of oscillation.

• This type of control action is therefore used where

the above can be tolerated and offset is undesirable.
PROPOSED SYSTEM

• Our solution to the existing system is the replacement

of PI controllers with Artificial Neural Network(ANN)
controllers.

• The artificial neural networks(ANN) are best suited for

solving the problems that are non-linear in nature.
