FSU Admissions Rep Packs Oven Park

It was another full house at Dorothy B. Oven Park last week when a group of parents
and students were treated to information overload from FSU admissions rep, Mr.
Michael Alberto. Hosted by SolutionSkills, this free informational event disseminated
plenty of timely admissions information to parents and their college bound students.

All aspects of getting into competitive colleges were discussed with plenty of
questions from the audience along the way. The role of grades, high school courses,
SATs and ACTs, the college essay, and activities resume were all explained in great
detail, giving those in attendance the very latest information on how to boost
chances of getting into competitive schools like FSU and UF.  One change that was
cited was that students can now data enter their test scores and course grades on
the application and not have to wait for them to be delivered by the testing
companies or from their school. Scores and grades are officially verified later in the
process.

Many questions were asked on the topic of what makes an application stand out or
how to find out about other important programs like residence halls and honors
programs. New changes with the SAT going digital was mentioned by the workshop
host, Randy Vickers, owner of SolutionSkills. This include facts like the PSAT, given
in October this fall, will also be a digital format, signaling the first major change to the
SAT in many years.

It was also emphasized to the parents and students the importance of doing things
early and being informed on any new wrinkles in the college admissions process.

The next edition of Road to College is now being planned with dates and program
information confirmed once future speakers are scheduled.

Wednesday, July 26th: Writing Your College Essay Workshop (FREE)

A common obstacle to completing college applications is the admissions essay. More
and more, schools are looking at the entrance essay when considering candidates. If
two seniors are relatively equal in merit on their activities resumes, then the schools
may make their decision based on the quality of the essays they’re comparing. This
may make the task of writing a daunting one, but we believe that smart planning
coupled with disciplined practice make for good results, and essays are no different.
We will look at your students’ drafts and offer up-to-date advice on the essay’s next
steps. Also, if the student has a good experience with this workshop, we will be
happy to discuss how we can plan to work even more directly with your senior in this,
or any other academic area this fall. Meets from 2:30pm-4:30pm.

Thursday, July 27th: Building Your Activities Resume (FREE)

As with the admissions essay, the activities resume is also a crucial aspect of the
college application. This is the place where students showcase their achievements in
areas such as academic honors, extracurricular activities, and work and volunteer
experience. Your senior may find that deciding on what to put on a resume is easy,
while composing and organizing the resume is a challenge. Our professional staff will
review the work your student has done for their resume and determine the next
steps. If your senior hasn’t even started, that’s okay too. Wherever you are in this
process, we at SolutionSkills are interested in helping to make the resume one that
will shine in the eyes of admissions officers.
Meets from 2:30pm-4:30pm

Much of the stress that college freshmen face is due to them having to adjust to a
new environment. An official tour of a school can alleviate some of this stress, and
we believe that a more personal tour could be even more effective! Led by
SolutionSkills president Randy Vickers and taking place on Tuesday, August 1st
from 9:30am until 1:30pm, these intimate groups featuring 3-6 seniors will tour
FSU, and have the opportunity to see the campus’ residence halls, observe areas of
group interest, and have a meal in Suwannee Hall (included in fee). If your senior is
interested in FSU, or just wants to see a university for themselves, this SuperTour
may be a prime opportunity!

Thursday, August 3rd : Starting Your College Application  (FREE)

While university applications can be stressful, intimidating and even feared, it is also
an opportunity for seniors to present their qualifications and achievements to an
acceptance board. A well-constructed application will stand out from the general
crop, giving your senior a greater chance of being accepted. In an informal yet
structured environment, your student will be assisted in this process to either begin,
work on or even complete college applications. Doing this with peers is a great way
to tackle this important responsibility in a productive and helpful atmosphere. Meets
from 2:30pm-4:30pm

All programs will be located or headquartered at the SolutionSkills office at 545 E
Tennessee St, Suite 200C, across from Leon High School.

Please let us know if you have any questions about these very informative and
helpful programs to get your senior on the right track, and before school starts!
