2.4 Standard Deviation and Mean For Ungrouped Data

Name: _________________________ ( ) Class: ________ Date: ________

Learning Objective:
 Calculate standard deviation for ungrouped data using calculator
 Calculate mean for ungrouped data using calculator.

Spread of Data Set

Range is a measure of the spread of the data defined as the difference between the maximum
and the minimum value.

Interquartile range is a measure of the spread of the data about the median. It tells us about the
range of the middle 50% of the distribution.

Standard deviation is a measure of spread on how the data are spread about the mean, and
which takes into account all the values of the data set.

Refer to this video the explanation of the concept of standard deviation.

Step 2:
Subtract the mean from each data point to find the differences xi − x .

Step 3:
Square each difference. This step is necessary so that the data doesn’t cancel each other out
and becomes zero.

Step 4:
Calculate the mean of the square differences.

Step 5:
Take square root, so that the calculated value has the same units as the original question.
This value is known as the standard deviation (SD) and is represented by the notation  .

Is there a more efficient way to calculate Mean and SD when given a large data set?

Answer: Using Statistic Mode in the Scientific Calculator to aid in the calculation.

Example 4
Find the mean and standard deviation for the following data.

x 27.5 32.5 37.5 42.5

Frequency, f 8 15 10 3

Note: Refer to the “Instructions for use of Calculator to find Mean and SD” notes.

Step 1: Data Entry

Step 2: Retrieve values for respective terms in the required formulas.

Step 3: Present answer by filling in the values of the formula from the data bank in the
calculator.
