Shrike LV

This Shrike LV kayak is designed to fit a paddler, 5ft 5 inches tall and weighing 140 pounds (63.5 kg)
with paddling clothes.

Dimensions of the kayak:

LOA 15ft 8" (4770 mm), Beam 20" (508 mm), weight 28 pounds (12.7kg), with three hatches, seat,
backrest, skeg, foot bulkhead foam and deck lines.
These dimensions were calculated by applying a 90% factor to all the standard Shrike dimensions,
with the cockpit slightly lengthened beyond 90% at the owner's request. The % factor is obtained
from the graph shown in the answer to FAQ question 1. The paper plans were printed to 90% scale,
and used throughout the construction.
The Datum Line is a line drawn across the worktop, square to the long edge, and approximately 2907
mm from the bow of the finished kayak. All measurements are in mm from the Datum Line. (+
means forward of Datum, - means aft of Datum.) Because the external and internal moulds have a
thickness, and the hull tapers, those located at +ve measurements, are placed aft of their line, and
those with -ve measurements are placed forward of their line.
One external mould is at Datum, the other is at +1143 mm.
Internal moulds are at +1674, +567, and -720
Foot bulkhead is at +1130
Cockpit rear bulkhead is at -45
Day compartment bulkhead is at -311
Aft end of 40mm wide masik is at +705
Internal cockpit opening, chosen by the owner is 760mm by 368mm (allowing for two thicknesses of
the 3mm upstand.)
The front of the cockpit opening is against the masik at +705
Aft deck beams are at -465, -630, -832 (and front of skeg box), -1020
Centres of 125mm wide cheek plates are at +239
Centre of seat is at +225 (i.e. 270 mm forward of aft cockpit bulkhead). This measurement should
not be changed.
Notes on the construction:
The masik and foot bulkhead profiles were used as shown for Shrike in the 90% plans. This allowed a
maximum shoe size on the foot bulkhead of U.K size 5 (USA 7 1/2, Continental 38, and Japan 24)
The shorter length required only one joint in the hull panels, and no scarf in the sheer clamps as 5.1
metre long timber was available.
The cockpit rim was formed from two complete layers of 3mm plywood.
Butt joints were used for the hull panels
Aft deck beams were of 12mm square cedar for lightness.
Glass cloth was laminated on the underside of the cockpit rim before assembly, for extra stiffness.
As the lady is left-handed, the skeg slider was placed on the starboard side, so the dominant hand
can be used for bracing.
