1 INTRODUCTION
This Service Letter applies to RT-flex96C and RT-flex84T-D engines.
Occasionally damage occurs on cams, rollers or guide pistons of fuel supply units that could
have been avoided by regular inspection. This service letter gives a list of points that should
be periodically checked to determine abnormalities that could lead to damage.

2 CHECK LIST
The following checks can easily be done through the inspection covers and are recommended
to be carried out regularly e.g. after each sea passage.
1. The running surface of cams and rollers should be carefully checked for abnormal running
marks, discoloration, scratches etc.
2. With the roller on the cam base circle, the visible part of the guide piston running surface
should be carefully checked for abnormal running marks.
3. Lift the fuel pump. The roller should now be able to rotate smoothly by hand. The axial
clearance of the roller should be between 0.26 and 0.54 mm
4. Check the casing for debris.
5. Check the fuel rail pressure after engine stop. There should not be a significant pressure
drop in the first 5 minutes after stopping the engine. If there is, the non return valves in the
fuel pump covers and in the connecting flanges of the intermediate fuel accumulator
should be checked.
In general, be familiar with the sound of a normal running unit so that suspicious noise like
knocking attracts attention.

3 REPORTING
In case of any signs of abnormal running conditions, please inform Wärtsilä soonest using the
Wärtsilä reporting template. Damages should be clearly documented with photographs. The
rising and falling sides of the cams as well as the cam’s TDC should be indicated with a white
marker on both sides of the cam.
