1 Introduction
Cases have been reported from ships in operation, where randomly liner wall temperature sensors
showed a sudden increase of the liner wall temperature (LWT), while other unit LWT remained in the
normal operating range.

The reason was found related with a hot water bypass of the cylinder liner. Due to the lower water guide
jacket (WGJ) slipping downwards, the cooling water was allowed to bypass the liner cooling bores, which
led to a locally reduced cooling efficiency and an increase of the LWT’s on that unit (see Figure 1).

2 Retrofit solution “C- clamp”


WinGD has developed a more robust, retrofittable solution to prevent the lower WGJ from slipping down.
This solution consists of a new design of holder (See Figure 2) in the form of a “C- clamp” which clamps
the WGJ and cylinder liner together to improve the sealing.

3 Retrofit implementation guideline
3.1 Cooling piping system works
Before beginning work ensure General Safety Precautions as mentioned in the Engines Maintenance
Manual (Chapter 0011−1/A1) are followed.

1) Stop the HT cooling water pumps.


2) Drain the cooling water system engine side.
3) Loosen the connections and flanges of cylinder liner inlet and WGJ inlet pipes (see Figure 3) to
remove any possibility of twisting of the WGJ.

3.2 Replacement of current support

1) Mount 3 eyebolts on WGJ topside (M10) holder


(Figure 4). Connect to engine room crane /
Eyebolt
support with chain blocks against slipping.
(Other methods may apply target is avoid
slipping down of WGJ during holder exchange
works).
2) Remove the old holders (first M12 top side
bolts, then M16 liner holding bolts)
(see Figure 5).
3) Check WGJ cast underside for flatness and
condition. Grind to achieve flat contact
for M20 bolt (if required).

4) Install the new “C-clamps” (see figure 5).
5) Tighten the 2 (M16) bolts towards cylinder liner
with 200Nm.
6) Mount vertical M12 (previously installed) bolts
without sleeves – for angular positioning of WGJ
(not shown on Figure 5)

3.3 Re-alignment of lower water guide jacket


The fixation bolt (M20) for support is to be tightened in three steps, with a confirmed gap clearance
between liner and lower water guide jacket.

The nominal clearance between liner and lower WGJ is 3.0mm +/- 0.2 mm on X72DF, and 2.0mm
+/-0.2mm on X62DF (see Figure 6). Note: The clearance may be different due to effective tolerances on
liner & WGJ however there should not be variations in excess of 0.4mm on a single cylinder liner. In such
a case where these conditions cannot be met, a contact check with engineer’s blue should be performed.

Tightening procedure of new M20 fixation bolt:
1st step 50 Nm of tightening force and check (plus record) of initial clearances.
2 step
nd 100 Nm of tightening force and check clearances
3rd step 150 Nm of tightening force and check final clearances (plus record final values in
template supplied, refer to page 7)

The locking nut (see Figure 7) to be tightened with 80 Nm, then remove the vertical M12 bolts (they are
no longer required).

3.4 Piping reassembly


After WGJ holder mounting, reassemble water piping without inducing undue stress in to the piping. In
case of gaps bigger than 1mm apply a second sealing gasket.

Repeat the WGJ holder replacement procedure for each cylinder one by one.

Store recorded clearances using the attached table (see page 7) on board.

3.5 Re-filling jacket cooling water system
After refilling the cooling water system, follow the below steps for correct air venting (see Figure 8):
1) Open cylinder liner inlet valve (pos 1)
2) Open air vent valve (pos 2)
3) Open manual air vent common line (pos 3)
4) Open JCW outlet valve (pos 4)
5) Open cylinder cover inlet valve (pos 5

3.6 Follow up actions


1) Check WGJ to Cylinder liner clearances (see step 3.3) after 2~3 weeks in service and compare with
initial records. Check for loosened bolts.
2) Perform a check again after 6 months in operation
